Spongy brakes
Ok I replaced the pads on my 97 F150 (they were paper thin) and now my brakes are really spongy. I have to press the pedal most of the way to the floor and even then its really soft. I had to crack the lines a little bit in order to get the pistons back far enough to get the calipers with the new pads on the rotor. Do I need to bleed the brakes, and if I do how do I do that.

Yes you need to bleed them. its easy have someone pump up the petal hold it and open the bleeder one either side don't matter. allow the petal to go to the floor and close the bleeder DO NOT MOVE THE PETAL BEFORE CLOSING THE BLEEDER. Then do the other side and this should help harden the petal. I AM BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT BUT THIS HAS WORKED FOR ME OVER THE YEARS.

ok easy way to bleed brakes is get a hose that fits over the bleeder screw and a bottle fill half way full of brake fluid run the hose in the bottle crack open the bleeder screw and pump the brake pedal until all the air bubbles comes out of the hose and fluid is filling the bottle up close the bleeder screw
Too bad I didn't have a hose otherwise the bottle trick woulda worked. Just have a couple of puddles of fluid on the driveway I had to clean up. But I bled them this morning and that fixed the problem. Now with the brakes bled and the new pads the truck stops 150% better.
powerstroke73: I am sorry about the mess on your driveway, i should have told you about catching the fluid in something. Ford tech is the man he knows his stuff. I am glad it worked for you.
