Angry Front Brakes Worn at 26K Miles?

Has anyone else had problems with the front brakes on their F-150 wearing prematurely? While having tires rotated I was informed that the inside pads on my front brakes were worn out. I took the truck to the dealership that I purchased the truck from and asked them to check the brakes as well. They also informed me that the brake pads were worn. I reminded them that the truck only had 26,000 miles and that it seemed too soon to be replacing brakes. They told me that the pads were only warrantied for 12K miles, which I was already aware of. However, it's hard to imagine brakes only lasting 26K miles. I called "Ford Satisfaction" and got none. The bill for turning the two front rotors and replacing the pads came to $256. I placed additional phone calls to both the dealership and to Ford Satisfaction, asking them to make sure a member of management was aware of my dissatisfaction. What can I expect from Ford? Apparently nothing. What will my next truck be???

BTW, the truck is driven mainly on the highway, not used commercially, not abused in any way, and well maintained.

yes it seems like ford pads wear out fast dont they
its the material they use that causes these to wear i seen some wear out in 15 k or so
depends on drivers habits
if u can have the dealer to check if the calipers are hanging up since its the inside pads that our wearing out more than outside pad if so then its cover by warranty rotors and pads but most likey it just worn out pads and that price they told ya is close to what our shop charges good luck

Welcome to the site Ray M!

Just changed the pads on all 4 wheels yesterday at ~53,000 miles. They "looked" bad when on, but once we got them out there was actually plenty of pad left. Seems the pads are tapered on each end so, unless you actually remove the calipers from the hubs, it looks like they are almost worn out.

BTW, four sets of pads & the front rotors turned= $80.

Ray: You didn't mention whether you had rear drum or disc brakes.

If you have rear drum brakes, and if your normal drive is highway, you may not be backing up much -- and more importantly, you may not be adjusting your rear brakes -- which advance the adjuster lever when you apply the brakes in reverse -- and make the adjustment when you apply the brakes in forward.

In this scenario, you could easily have your rear brakes out of adjustment -- not doing their share -- for which the disc (which are ALWAYS in proper adjustment) may be doing more than their already-major share of the job.

If you've got 4-wheel disc -- then that's another road.

My front pads looked like a rock or something got in between the pad and the rotor. The rotor is actually grooved and the pad was nowhere near being worn to the rivits.

Last week, I just replaced my front pads for the first time ever. My truck has 123,000+. There was about 10% left on the fronts. The rear drums had about 50% left.

My mechanic says Ford trucks have some of the best - longest lasting brake systems built. I love the carbon ceramic pads - a bit expensive but really clean. You obviously drive like a racer or your brakes are made from different materials than mine. I tow a modest wt. camper and a horse trailer from about 5% of the time too.

Thumbs down

I just got mine done at 32,500 miles. They hit me hard too, about $220! When they called I thought it was way too much but really didn't have time to pick it up and try someplace else or wait until I could get to it. I could hear them starting on the rotors and didn't want to take the chance of having to replace those too. Had my Maxima done not that long ago only $99.

Hey Ray,

Welcome to the site. Last time I had checked the front pads on my truck were wearing pretty fast as well. 27,500(apx) and I have between 30%-25% pad life left.

Just tell me where you had your front brakes done so I can avoid them. I am sorry to say but you got ripped on that price. From what I have seen normal front brake service usualy runs from $99-$150

I just paid a $500 ($750 Canadian) brake repair bill on the weekend! My 98 F150 with less than 50,000 miles has had major vibration problems, brake shudder, and rotor warping problems since new.

I have been complaning to my dealer the whole time with no satisfaction. "That is normal with metalic pads" they said! They machined the rotors, balanced tires, installed new tires, inspected brakes, etc...

This weekend I had enough and went in again. low and behold, the caliper was sticking. the inner front left pad was toast and so was my rotor! I strongly suspect it has been like that since new. I complained bitterly with the dealer paying no ttention, I called Ford! We will have to see what they say! Better be good!!!

Any way, check the slide pin/bolt on the caliper. That is what did me in!!!

Angry

Got a call from Ford Canada.

They tell me that my problem is with my dealer and not with Ford Canada. I told him that it is the pre-mature failure of a Ford part and that they are at least partly responsible. The rep refused to allow me to talk to his supervisor and told me that he spoke for Ford Canada regarding this issue.

The battle rages on! Be sure to call the corporate office and express your concerns on a regular basis....I plan to.

Ford Canada : 1-800-565-3673

Good Luck!
