1997...4W ABS?
This morning on my way into work I noticed that the front tires can lock up on my 97 F150 4WD. Isn't there suppose to be 4 wheel ABS on this vehicle or am I wrong? Any response is greatly appriciated. Thanks
Optional on the XLT. Mine has 4 wheel ABS. I didn't think the brakes were good enough to lock the front wheels anyway. Hmmm

I found my old '97 brochure. Moveover is right, 4WABS was an option on lower than Lariat trim levels. Off Road Package doesn't have anything to do with it. Easiest way to tell is to look for anti-lock sensor on back side of Backing Plate at front wheels.
Thanks for the help guys...I guess I just have to face the fact that I purchased a truck WITHOUT 4WABS. Oh well it should make for intersting Michigan winter travel.

The easiest way to tell if you have 4WABS is to pop the hood and look under the air intake system between the engine and the driver's fender well. Ther will be a box with alot of brake lines going to it. If you have that, you have 4WABS. If not you have rear wheel only.

Now how stupid is rear wheel ABS only? I thought the whole purpose of ABS was to keep the wheels from locking so you could still steer the vehicle to avoid accidents when having to brake heavily. You can't do much steering if the front wheels are locked up.
Chris, rear ABS is very important on P/U trucks. If the rear locks up in a panic stop, it can swing around in front of you...kind of like a trailer jacknifing. I saw it happen on a Consumer Reports show. Yes, most of your braking is in the front but if you had a choice of axles, ABS would be more effective on the rear.
