I believe ALL '97's are equipped with REAR ABS...and four wheel ABS was available as an option....Open the hood, and look at the master cylinder..it should have a complex-looking pump-like device on the master (in lower front) going to the brake lines, if it has four wheel ABS. Don't confuse the large round diaphram on the rear...that'll be the power brake booster.

To firm up the pedal, try adjusting the rear brake shoes a notch or two tighter, if possible without dragging...BTW, the front brakes are twin piston calipers, so they will have a little more pedal travel because of increased displacement.

Cool Break questions

1. How do I know if my 97 F150 has ABS. I have the abs light on the dash.

2. I have more break pedel travel the I like on a truck. I blead the breaks, little better but still not good, the breaks are 70% front and back. any sudgestions.

Hey Don, the easiest way to tell if you have two or four wheel abs is this. four two wheel abs you will only have a speed sensor in the rear differential. If you have four wheel abs, there will be a speed sensor in the rear diff. and one at each front wheel. Look for the cable hooked to the brake hose. Hope this helps.

thanks. I have Rear ABS. I have a 98 Explorer with ABS on all four. I found the F150 strange at first. getting used to it. the F150 feels mutch bigger in breaking.

Thumbs up

My 98 F-150 had rear drum ABS and they were nice. My new 2000 has the 4 wheel disk ABS and the first time I applied the brakes during the test drive...I about broke my kneck! MUCH better stopping ability and far less pedal travel.

I am very impressed at how well this 4,200 lb + truck stops!

Cool

Well today I did a full break check, the rear breaks are in great shape. I bent the clip on the self adjester and that made a big diferance.

My front rotors are warped, I messured .003 out. I am going to try to get the dealer to fix em.

thanks for all the advice. Don
