Cool Brake Problems

I have a 1993 Ford F150 4x4 shortbed with 300 inline six cylinder engine. I have had nothing but front brake problems since I have owned it. The last brake job last three months before the new pads are half gone and new rotors are warped again. Anyone have any suggestions. I think either caliper is causing it or some type of computer problem. Please advise.

Have you checked the rear brakes? they might be out of adjustment causing the front ones to do all the work.
also check to see that the wheel bearings are properly seated, they might be causing your rotors to warp.

A post on another thread says over tightening the wheel lugs can cause the rotor to warp.

KAMPE,

Premature wear of the front brakes usually results from one of the following problems (in order of liklihood)

1. Rotors cut too thin. If this is the case, your brakes cannot dissapate heat and the pads burn up and the rotors warp. The cure is new rotors and pads.

2. Frozen Caliper. This is easy to diagnose, as only one of the two front brakes wears out. In addition, you can confirm this by jacking up the front wheels and trying to spin by hand, if one of the wheels doesn't spin, the caliper is either frozen or sticking. The cure is either a rebuilt caliper (more likely) or lubricating the caliper slides (almost never).

3. The "proportioning valve" is gone and the fronts are doing all the braking. This usually manifests itself as multiple front brake jobs while the rears continue to look "brand new." Usually this is also accompanied by the front brakes locking prematurely in an abrupt stop.

4. Rear brakes out of adjustment. This can be diagnosed by a low brake pedal. However, I have rarely seen this problem.
