any type. I've been to cleaveland national forest, cleghorn (off the 215fwy), lake arrowhead, hungry valley (gorman), pismo, glamis...
trying to find out if anybody else has other known spots.

Lucerne valley/Barstow, or Johnson Valley. Both are in the High Desert.

Ocotillo wells is the most popular in the winter time. There is also almost anywhere in San Bernadino. Coral Canyon is east of San Diego, however there are not very many 4x4 places mainly dirtbikes and quads/side by sides. I know there is a lot of off roading around Cal Poly which is obviously not "so cal" but its closer to you than me. And I have also been around Castaic Lake. Here is a link to all the OHV trails. http://www.4x4books.com/cas4wd.htm

The problem with Southern California is that the demand to live here is so high that all the empty land is being developed and its illegal to off road anywhere. Not that is stops anyone but still. It never stopped me when I was in High School.

If you find somewhere you like, be respectful and don't trash the place. Enjoy

Pretend like your going to Big Bear (Interstate 330 I believe), Half way up the mountain there is a sign pointing towards Lake Arrowhead. Take it.

As far as off roading, I have personally never been off roading around Arrowhead, mainly Big Bear, but since they are so close I would imagine they are basically the same. There will be rock gardens and flat dirt roads and everything in between. You just gotta research it a little. Just don't go off the trail. Morons who think they are badass and invisible (Me, when I was 16.) go off the trail and destroy the natural habitat and trails are constantly being closed because of it.

Have fun and be safe
