wow cant believe i missed this thread...

so during that storm, i was actually duck hunting in the valley. yes, i was walking against 70mph winds and the rain hitting my face felt like needles.

anyways, the road out to our field always floods in storms like this, i drove through it, water up to the doors, made it fine in 4x4. next, we have to turn off down this mud strip, and my god the ruts were deep this time. didnt take long for my buddy's durango to get stuck, even with 4x4. i had to yank him out then we just took my truck the rest of the way.

the storm was RIDICULOUS. we shot a lot of ducks that day too.

i woulda taken pics but a) my camera battery was dead and b) the storm was too intense to be able to get any good shots, they woulda been blurred to hell.

Musta been fun! Souns like a wheeling/hunting trip all in one. Those are always interesting. Can't beleive you were voluntarily out in that storm! How many birds ya nab ? and what kind(s) ? And did you say you own a strip of flooded road and muddy ruts ? ? ?

yeah everyone thinks im f'in crazy for going out there at 6am in that weather. we killed our limits, 7 birds each. mostly mallards, some widgeon, sprig, and teal also.

we dont own the fields. we lease hunting rights, and have to right to use the muddy *** roads. its funny because the farmer that works out there has a 2wd F150, and when the roads get soupy he pulls a trailer out there with his quad, since his truck cant go there. i just wave at him as i rip through in my 4x4.

however, near my ranch in Shasta County, i know of TONS of old logging roads on public property (forest service) that i drive during turkey season. some of those roads get real nasty, and at higher elevations have lots of snow. its the best of all worlds, tons of public roads, and you can wheel in mud or snow in the same day.

I need a fuggin lift.

My family owns clearlake in Los Banos, where do you hunt? Have we had this convo before lol. I just got in a motorcycle wreck this morning, f'd the bike up so I gotta fix that, including my foot, leg, etc. I was wearing gear and it tore through it believe it or not, would have been a disaster if I wasn't wearing.

do you not live with your family? Manteca seems to be a far town if your family owns property in los banos.

msal: Well, your definately crazy but sounds like you had some fun. You all got your limit ? Now thats a damn good day IMO. Get to hunt, get to wheel, and you get to eat ! And im very jealous you already have some property up in the Mt. Shasta area. Like I said, that place is pure paradise for me. I love it.

i hunt just outside of Arbuckle, about 40 minutes north of Davis. Los Banos has some excellent hunting though, my buddy used to have a club down there and my cousin's club is there also, ive hunted it a few times.

Sorry to hear about your wreck, hope you're okay and wish you a quick recovery. Be careful on those things man, they can become deathtraps much easier then you would think.

yeah it was an excellent hunt, even in the extreme conditions. The Lassen/Shasta area is honestly my favorite place in the world. Never am i happier then when i am up there, i spend a majority of my summer working on the ranch and kicking back and enjoying myself. We have 170 acres, 4 cabins. I can house lots of buddies (32 if need be), you can imagine how much fun we have since its so secluded. We are in the dead center of Lassen National Forest, which in my opinion is one of the prettiest places in the country.

i bet it hurts, i fell off a longboard while going 30mph downhill and had some of the worst road rash imaginable. both arms from wrist to elbow, both knees, and right side of my hip all had zero skin left. attempting to sleep that night was HORRIFIC.

10 bucks an hour, 8 hour days, 5 days a week = 400 bucks a week. not bad on the ranch. we build/fix barbed wire fences, re-roof the cabins, clear brush and fallen trees from winter, fix the irrigation ditches...typical ranch work.

well ducks season is almost over, but turkey season is in April, and those logging roads in lassen forest can be a blast at elevation when it snows. could makes for a fun hunting/wheeling trip.
