Cool Idling At Start Up And Oxy Sensor, Shocks Too !

Hello:

Need some input. I have 98 F150 4.6 with 120,000 miles.
How long do factory shocks last? How long do the oxy sensors last?. Sometimes when starting, the engine dies unless I can keep it under load by slipping it into neutral and then reving it as I put it into gear. After it warms up it seems to be okay. Just put new plugs and plug wires (Motorcraft) Thanks for any help.

the factory shocks will usually last ...

about 40000,the O2 recommened interval is 60000,your idle problem sounds like a sticking idle control valve located piggy back in the throttle body

if it is having problems idling when cold it could also be the coolant temp sensor. when the engine is cold this is the main sensor running the show.

good luck-

Idling problem and oxy sensor

Thanks for the info. The mechanic is going to check it out. He told me that he thought if my oxy sensor was bad that the check engine light would come on. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS THE CASE???? He also thought the same about the temp sensor. I would sure like to avoid replacing them at this time if they don't need it.

THANKS

Fredola

The mechanic is correct a bad o2 should give you a CE light. More than likely, you IAC motor needs to be cleaned. You can do it with carb cleaner, just be careful not to let it run into the IAC motor. It is a simple job you can do yourself. Every year around this time we get lots of questions about this same issue.

My truck has over 200,000 miles and has 3 of 4 original o2 sensors. The internal heater failed on the bad one, not the sensor itself. That failure was at 220,000 miles. IMO factory shocks are typically good for 80,000-90,000 miles or sooner if they are leaking large amounts of oil.
