Talking ? about changing oil pump and stuff on oil cap

HI,
I have a Ford f-150 xl 94. It's got a 300 straight 6 and 4.9l. I want to change my filter on the oil pump cauz its giving me problems. The oil presseure sometimes goes off the frits when its cold. It goes up and down, mostly down when I give it gas. When it warms up i get pressure and its fine. Im gonna put 5-30 in it to see if that helps. I do get oil pressure when it warms up. Prob some gunk on the filter. Anyway my ? is does the trany have to be taken off when I take my motor off the mounts and lift it? I called the ford garage and they said I needed to, but i got a full manual and it didnt say a damn thing! Its a auto 4x4 so they said it needs to come off! I wanna do the job to save my self 500 bucks considering the oil pump only costs 20 bucks. Can someone help me? Also I changed my oil, and i got a milky white substance on the underneath of the cap. It also smells sweet. Ive also noticed im leakin antifreeze, but the oil does not have it in it when i drain it or check my dipstick. Could this be just condensation? Help me guys! :-)

On the ladder part of your posting , Yes about your oil. It is condensation , but to worry about it. I bet you make alot of short trips, right???? This causes this. If I were you ,I wouldn`t change oil wt. yet. Just loosen the motor mounts jack the engine up enough to remove the oil pan & replace the oil pump. It can be tricky to do. I have done a few in the distance past, when I was alot younger. Just be real careful!!!!!!! I hope this helps alittle!!

Before you go changing the oil pump, you should get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and see what pressure you are really getting. You might have a faulty gauge or sending unit and I would hate to see you go through a lot of trouble for nothing.

I agree with Navi Man - check and make sure you don't have a bad sensor at work there. That would be a whole lot simpler than the alternatives!

As to the second question, yes it could be just condensation or it could be antifreeze on the cap. I would be worried knowing you are leaking antifreeze somewhere and you are finding the junk on your oil cap that smells sweet. I get junk under the cap on my 97 and my 99, but that is condensation only, no antifreeze leaks, and confirmed via oil analysis. If I started losing antifreeze, I'd be wondering. Do you know where the antifreeze is leaking? It may be time for a checkup on that engine (ie: leaking head gasket)
