sticking accelerator
I have a 97 with a 5.4. My problem is the throttle will stick when I first start it. I have to tap it with my foot to "unstick"it and then it works fine.
I have unhooked the throttle cable and it seems very smooth, I don't think that is the problem. I looked at the air intake and there is carbon buildup on the butterfly valve. I've heard you are not supposed to clean it.
Questions: Is the carbon buildup my problem?
How should I clean it out?
Thanks

I had a 98 Explorer sport that had the same problem. It was still under warranty at the time and I just brought it to the dealer for them to fix. I can't remember what the cause was. I'll see if I still have to receipts from the work that was done. Don't know if it would be the same thing.
yes you are supposed to clean it. it is mostlikely your problem.
just DO NOT use carb cleaner and DO NOT run your engine while cleaning it!
if you want to do it yourself use only "Intake cleaner" or "Throttle body" cleaner. just spray it in there and hold open the throttle plate with and old wooden spoon (Do not use a screwdriver it can scrtach the coating) then let the excess evaporate before you try to start it. when you do start it it will run a little rough. make shure you let it run a while so the cats have time to heat up and burn up any leftover cleaner.
or you can take it to a shop and have a whole intake cleaning service. ask the shops you call what machine they use. it should be a snap on, BG, or I can't think of the name! it should cost $70-$150
good luck.
