Moaning sound from FIPK????
Moaning sound from FIPK????
Well, it's winter again (or at least it's COLD!), and once again there is a "moaning" sound coming from my engine compartment, I think from the intake system (FIPK). This doesn't happen in the warm weather, but it's annoying now.
Symptoms are this: between roughly 900-1200 rpm, generally close to an idle situation, the engine will all of a sudden Kick up 200-300 rpm and the thing will start moaning. Sometimes it drops back down and stops; sometimes I have to goose the pedal to stop it; sometimes I can't stop it, but when I exceed that rpm range, it goes away. Sometimes, it doesn't do it at all. No codes present in PCM, either.
I have a Pacesetter FIPK, and they have been totally non-responsive in replying to my questions.
I seem to remember other posts on this topic and I assume it"s some temp sensor in the intake path, but if anyone knows how to fix it, short of putting the stock setup back on, I'd appreciate the help. I have also read where this happens to guys only in WARM weather, so I'm kinda baffled at this point.
Thanks!

I put one of the cheap E-bay intakes on my truck about a week ago. It does the same thing. I have read that if you reinstall the black L shaped box into the 3/4 inch emissions hose this will cure the problem. I am going to do it in the next couple of days, Ill let you know how it goes.

I had that problem and fixed it....
I recently installed a FIPK (pics in gallery) and it worked great for a couple weeks. The temps started getting down into the 40's and this loud horn like moaning sound would come up while I started the truck up. I lived with it and eventually it would do it sometimes while driving. It got annoying so I had to fix it. I found a loose hose clamp and thought that was the problem. Nope, replaced all of them with good ones (ones with the kit were junk) and still heard this loud horn like sound. I decided to add the plastic air silencer box inline in the stock position to see if it cleared it up. I have not heard the sound since (did this this weekend). It took a while and some hose cutting to get it to fit back under the TB cover but I did it. I also reset the computer and noticed more improvement with the FIPK over stock! If you need them, I can take/post a few pics.
This is great. I knew I would find something about this on this board. I have the K&N FIPK and have been exchanging email with them on this problem. So far...nothing.
I am going to try to put the black box back in, if nothing else to get rid of this &(#$$ moaning.

Well, it looks like the airbox/silencer may do the trick. Been over a year since I installed the FIPK, however, and I don't remember any silencer thingie. Anyone got a pic of it?
BTW, my FIPK leaves the back half of the stock air cleaner assy in place; front part is replaced by cone filter.

If you pinch the IAC hose with your fingers, you will notice the moan goes away.I had the same problem on my Expy.K&N was no help when I called them on it,so what I did is machine a piece of stainless steel with a 3/16"hole in it.I remember a post about AIRFORCE ONE sending out plastic reducers to install in this hose at the point where it enters the intake tube.I havent heard this sound anymore after installing this .Hope this helps

Thier should be a peice of harder rubber hose, about 1" diameter, It has a 90* bend in it. If you cut 1" off one end, it will make the bend much smoother and all your noises will be eliminated. That is what I have done and have had no noises, and we are hitting 20* at night and in the mornings. The hose should be toward the end (right before it goes into the throttle boddy) and connects kinda in toward the throttle body.
Thanks
I'll check it out over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Will check out the silencer box thing and/or try squeezing the hose. If the hose trick work, I imagine I can find some sort of a reducer fitting that I can adapt.

Interesting Topic, Same Problem I Think
Hey guys, I think I may have the same problem here. I have a moaning sound also However it doesn't seem to happen between any certain RPM's. The best comparssion I could come up with was that of feedback from a guitar amp or speaker. Is this what it sounds similar to guys. I only notice it momentarly and it's not long enough to figure out where it is comming from. It has happend while moving sitting still and going in reverse. I first thought it might be trasmission realated. But if it were I think I would hear it alot more. However before I had my K&N FIPK it never happend. I do realize what you are talking about when you say the stock silencer box. However if it works I belive it would be much easier to cut one inch off the 90 degree hose like was just mentioned. If anyone else has done this and it worked let me know. I just hate to do it and find out that wasn't the problem. Maby I should try the Silencer first and then that as a last resort. Keep me up to date with any new happens on this issue.
I think what PhillipSVT is mentioning (correct me if I'm wrong) is the Air Bi-pass valve. If the moaning is audible, cut off the phlange end of the bi-pass or, you can replace it with a rubber hose w/ hose clamps.
Happy Holidays everyone.

It worked!!!
Will guys I took about 5 mins. yesterday and reinstalled the silencer box and NO NOISES!! It is great, now I don't have to be embarassed to drive my truck. It took alittle work but I got it to fit under the tb cover with no cutting of the plastic, just the hoses.
Hope you guys try this before spending money on a reducer.

Could you give me some further info on what you did. I realize you got the stock Silencer to fit but how. What hoses did you cut and aprox. how much. I would really appreciat any help with this before I go and do it. Thanks Kerk
