Royal Purple and a Mobil 1 Filter. Be willing to bet a good synthetic will stop that dry start up.

It's probably a faulty filter. They're not perfect all the time. Get another Motorcraft filter and see if that doesn't stop the start up noise. You are buying the proper filter, aren't you? Oh, one final question. You are using 5W-20, aren't you? Some people have reported getting a ticking sound at startup when using the wrong (higher) oil viscosity.

My 99’ 4.6 F-150 does the exact same thing and I have been using Mobile1 5W-30 and a Motorcraft oil filter. If I use Mobile1 10W-30 I don’t have the noise at start after it has sit for a couple of days, so I doubt it’s a filter issue.

its been happening for awhile and ive been using the same filter every time so i dont think thats the problem. does anyone have any opinions about switching to a synthetic oil at this point. its always had dino oil in it and i dont want to have problems by switching at 50,000 miles. and yes ive been using 5w-30 as called for in the owners manual

JerPamB,
The point - I think - is that one particular filter (not the brand) may be bad. You can always get a bad apple. Keep the same brand but change the filter that is now on your truck and see if it helps.
It is always a good idea to switch to full synthetic if you ask me. Some will disagree with whether or not you need synthetic but none will disagree that synthetic is better oil. 50,000 miles is a perfect time to switch.

If you have a '01, that's not what your manual is supposed to say.

I switched to Mobil 1 @ over 80k miles. Did the same to the wifes Plymouth Acclaim with over 110k miles too. No drips after many months and miles since.

EEEEEEK!

Not another what oil are you using thread.

I can't help you JerPamB. But maybe my post might get this thing back on track and somebody can help you with your problem. This oil brand and viscosity has been discussed so many times and the same info is in the archives.

Good luck in getting your truck fixed.

I had a 99 Jeep Wrangler that sounded like a thrashing machine when started on a cold morning. After a change to Amsoil it started nice and quiet. Same thing would happen with Mobil one or Royal Purple I'd bet.

Navi Man,

The post is on track, we are reccomending that he switch to a synthetic type oil. Sorry we have offended you by mentioning oil

Tex,

No offense taken and I have no problem with synthetic oil. I make a heck of a lot more profit on selling synthetic oil than I do on conventional oils.

It just seemed like what posters were doing is saying what oil and viscosity they used. I'm sure it would be more meaningful to JerPamB if the posters were stating their change over to synthetic oil cured the same problem he is experiencing, then it would be more relevant to his problem. Just stating "I use brand X synthetic oil and I have no problem" doesn't really address the problem. I was just helping JerPamB out in trying to get his post back to the original problem. I guess maybe I offended you. Sorry if you feel that way.
