5.4 Oil filter removal

I just bought a 2000 F-150 4x4 Lariat w/ the 5.4 & I was wondering the best way to get the oil filter off -- it looks hard to get to.

When you go to change your oil, simply crank/turn your wheels all the way to the right and you will see the (secret) behind changing your oil filter. There is more clearance with the wheels cranked versus leaving them straight.

well i'll be a son of a b**** LoL! I've been changing the oil for 2 years now with the wheels straight and its such a PITA!!!! But it can be done. dont' think i can do it wiht the wheels turned though, cuz i use ramps, but still would have been good to know.

if you dont' turn the wheels, you have to reach over like the tie rod, or something, and a bunch of other stuff, and take it off, turn it upside down so all the oil runs out and slide it down some, then flip it over, then on its side and out. easy as pie. LoL! definately took me like 20 minutes the 1st time i did it to figure out how to get it out, but i have it pretty much down now. have fun trying to get a wrenh in there though if you can get it off by hand. LoL!!!

really old pic

I have no problems getting at the filter with the wheels straight. I don' even jack it up. Just reach up and turn it.

Where are your filters? Mine is inside the front bumper. Couldn't be easier.

I've never had a problem w/ the oil filter, just reach up and turn it. With it being a 4x4, you shouldn't have any problems (needing to jack it up or ramps).

You guys are spoiled - try changing the oil filter on older escorts - they are a bitch!

Yes, the same trick works on the 4.6l engine.

You can tell who has the remote filter behind the front bumper and who has the one tucked over the crossmember or differential by the response to this question!

Talking

Took me 20 minutes to find the oil filter the very first time I changed mine!! Didn't know that it was a remote and located in the wheel well....... Glad it's there. Makes it very easy, but kinda puts it in a not so protected place. One good hit or some serious 4 wheeling and I could see that thing getting damaged........

My 99 5.4L oil filter is on the side of the block, above the front transfer case/diff. With 4x4 it really is easy to reach, as long as you have skinney hands.

It took me quite a while the first time too. I still don't know how I ever found it to be honest.

I knew about the turning the wheels thing but there's no way to avoid making a mess. I got tires of the mess and having to remove the skid plate every time. Oh well, fixed that problem...
