PING or KNOCK.

I have been reading a bit on this fourm. Just found it today. It seems that ping is somewhat common to the 4.6? yes ? No?

I have a 4.6. It will ping when pulling a load, even with 91 oct every once in awhile. It drives me crazy. I feel like I am going to kill the truck.

Does this happen to everyone? Is there anything you can do about it?

Thanks for any information.

If your 4.6 is pinging be careful. I burnt cylinder 4 and 7 intake valves and scored a cylinder Sat night . I was climbing a hill on the freeway and started to hear pinging so I let up on the gas but the "service engine soon" light started flashing, got off at the next offramp and the truck was missing. This was a 1999 with 54,000 miles and had a superchip. I'm not bagging on superchip because I loved the way the truck ran and yes I was running the best gas we can get here in California (Chevron). So be careful if your engine is pinging. Great shop put another 4.6 in for $2,800. Truck runs great again but I left the chip out.

I agree...pinging == bad bad deal! You'll end up melting a spark plug or worse like he said...torching your valves.
