5.4 Problems
5.4 Problems
Well, I changed the Fuel Filter and my problem did not go away - but here is more detail
When cold - approaching 45 MPH - in overdrive, when I give it a little gas (not enough to downshift to 3) it begins cutting out.
When warm this problem goes away.
Engine seems to run fine when cold and idles well etc..
Engine runs great when warm and never cuts out.
The check engine light has never come on.
It is a 2001 Supercrew with 5.4 liter w/ 54K. I'm sure it's a temperature sensor or something like that. I'm too cheap to take it to the dealer for analysis since my dealer mechanics are complete idiots and would probably waste a lot of my money doing unnecessary repairs since it doesn't present this problem when you really get on it when cold - only when driving leisurely.
Any Ideas on what to look for?
I'm going to try fuel injector cleaner on the next tank - and possibly change the pcv valve and o/2 sensor. Possibly change any other temperature type sensors I can identify.
If I feel lucky Saturday I'm going to try the Spark Plugs but they look like a real all day project since they are buried under the injector rails.
It cuts out so bad - it isn't a mere miss - it's like the ignition is turned off and back on.
Fix or repair daily - I should have known better.

I haven't been following your previous posts...
Have you....
Replaced Air filter?
Replaced PCV Valve (JIC)?
Paid a local mechanic (not dealer) to read the codes? Keep in mind that codes don't always set the mil light.
Pay local mechanic to diagnose the problem? Their code readers are more advanced than the average & can usually read & test individual sensors.
Hope this helps.

Hello rexwl,
First off, welcome to the forums. We seem to be getting more and more members all the time. This is great as it expands the knowledge base for us all.
I have a couple of suggestions. One of the things you may try is to get one of the Ford techs to take a test ride with you and then you can attempt to duplicate the problem for him. I too get impatient at times with dealer techs but intermitant problems can be real darned tough to diagnos. I own an A/C company and we have the same problem at times...it works fine while we are watching it but the gremlins go back to work once they see us leave.
My second suggestion is to try to look up a member here that goes by jefflaws...he is a Ford tech and I have seen him walk a few people through problems in a way that leaves me amazed...He knows his stuff.
Hope this helps,
Rocks

Sure it's common
After reviewing all the posts on this board this seems to be a recurring problem with 5.4 liters. I see about 3 posts with the same problem.
I'm sure it's one of the sensors - I'm going to start with the two O2 sensors nearest the engine and the PVC valve.
If that doesn't get it - I'm going to choke up the cash to get the engine analyzed - and download the latest code into the computer. This apparently changes the shift patterns for a Supercrew. This puppy shifts into overdrive way too soon for my taste.
I'm only going to change the O2 sensors because it has 50K and it's probably due anyway.
I going to eat my wheaties this weekend and change the plugs regardless.
Generally I'm in the - if it ain't broke don't fix it or modify it group.
I get a real kick out of reading all the posts from the young guys modifying their engines and trucks then listing all of the mods.
I'm into stock - completely stock - a mod for me is using sparkplugs that aren't OEM - I think I'll splurge this weekend -so here is a list of mods for my truck
Completely Stock 2001 Supercrew with every possible option available from the factory sans sunroof.
5.4 Liter - 54K miles
Brand Spanking New Wicks Fuel Filter (sorry Ford)
Soon to have Bosch Platinum Spark Plugs :-)
