Bigger oil filter

Is there a bigger oil filter that I can put on my 4.6L. I know that when I had my Z28 I went with a bigger truck filter and it added about a 1/2 qt. Is there anything like this for a truck?

TomatoTruck,

I don't believe there is strictly a bigger oil filter you can use to increase your trucks oil capacity... There are systems like the one Amsoil makes with the two huge filters to increase your oil capacity, or you could always just install a larger oil pan.

the larger oil pan

The larger oil pan won't make a difference. When under severe accelleration the oil will still bottleneck at the filter.

I would suggest just doing some research on different sized filters, I think Mobile 1 filters have the largest capacities (besides amsoil) but they're also one of the most expensive as well.

When I had my 4Runner I put an Amsoil filter which was about 25% bigger. Don't know if they are like that though.

No larger oil filter.

Our filters have metric threads and I cannot find anything that crosses with it.

You want a larger filter, put a relocation kit on it.

Dang...msparks beat me to it. He's right, these trucks take a filter with a 22x1.5 metric thread size and no one makes a physically larger filter for it. Any brand is going to be the same size/capacity. Go take a look at my remote kit because this is the only way. Going with a FL-1A (or PH8A if you would dare use a Fram) style filter will give you about a 1/2 quart increase, if that. I didn't do the remote filter for the increase in capacity though, did it for the remote filter. A 1/2 qt. increase is going to do nothing for you. What was your goal in increasing the capacity anyways?? If it was cooling, trust me, these trucks don't need it. I have an oil temp gauge also.https://www.f150online.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89545

Oil Filter

The reason that I want this was for increase capacity for flow and filtration. I have thought about the Amsoil duel filter but I really do not want to replumb my truck. It never seems to fail when I try to do something like that something will fail and cost me mega $. I could just see snagging one of those lines and all the oil coming out

Heres an easy solution that you guys seem to be missing, get a oil filter relocation kit for whatever size motor you have, and one for whatever size filter you want and there you go, larger oil filter and no more metric threads.

TomatoTruck,
Just a few realistic questions & comments:
What's your goal with this truck? Performance? Reliability? What have you done to the motor? Anything that increased lubrication demands?

My 5.4 oil pressure is fine....indicating no starvation or sucking air. In the flats, around corners, hard stopping, etc.

Increasing the filtration area won't necesarily help move more oil or cool the oil. The changing interval of the filter will also remain the same.
49% of oil pressure in a system is dictated by the bearing clearances and how much oil is moved through the head. The other 49% of the pressure in the system is due to the oil pump and pickup.

If you are worried about starvation, the extra 1/2qt capacity of the filter will hold the oil, not in the sump, where it's needed.

If you are concerned about particle size, go to a bypass filter, like those discussed at Ford-Diesel

Hope this helps.

Tony

If your going to spend the money why not upgrade your filtration system to a by-pass??? I mean what good is a bigger filter that can only filter out the rocks, and bugs, and such??

By-pass filtration can filter to less than 1 micron, and in some cases 1/10 of a micron!!! Less particles in your oil allow your additive package to work less and last longer, Also your oil will have to carry less contaminants, therefore will be able to do the job of lubricating, and cooling.

Since there is better filtration your will theoritically get longer engine life and better performance, since the engine will wear far less than with a conventional full flow filter.

also with a by-pass system your full flow filter will get less contaminated and last longer.

But hey why would we want our trucks to last longer?? Then we couldn't get a new one in a couple of years!!! LOL

Rhost makes a very good point.
