5.4 Manufacturing Changes

Got a new 2002 F150 Supercrew, 4X4 with the 5.4 liter engine. It has a build date of July 2002. I'm curious as to when Ford made the changes to coil on plug ignition, fenderwell cold air induction, the 9.75 inch rear end etc. The dealership dosn't seem to know exactly when each of these started so not much help there. Any information or source identification will be appreciated

The COP ignition on 5.4 F150's started with the last redesign year which was 97. The 4.6 didn't get COP till about 2001. Dodge as also followed suit and it's 5.0 has been COP for some time now as well. Not sure on the fenderwell cold air, it might have started with the 97 model year as well. The 9.75 is the heavier axle opposed to the standard 8.8 F150 axle which has been used for years ( back to 94 at least on the F150)

My 98 5.4 has the fenderwell cold air induction system and it was built in early September of 1997. That's one of the reasons I have been hesitated on switching to one of the aftermarket intakes that draw the heated air from under the hood. Some people say the engine is only affected while sitting still but I think differently, I think most of the time the air under hood is somewhat warmer then the outside air. Not that I have done any scientific research on it.

Using my auto tap I found that while sitting still at a light my intake air temp rose by as much as 20 degrees. But within about a nanosecond of leaving the light the intake temp dropped to about 5 degrees over ambient. It seemed as if the engine compartment wash flushed of the hot air almost as soon as the truck started to move.
There are some good posts on this topic by SSCully. He did several very in depth studies and found the same thing.
