Engine stalling - Gremlins in the Engine
Hey Guys,
ABout a week ago, my engine (98 F-150 5.4, 74K miles) started acting really weird. At 60 mph, the engine cut out and the check engine light came on. The truck was still running but it would not respond to the throttle. I put it in neutral, turned it off, and re-started. No problem. It ran great. This has happened about 5 or 6 times in the past week. After it happens, the truck recovers and runs great. I have purchased the OBD-II but it is in transit.
When the problem happens, it sounds like it is starved for fuel.....
But after turning it on and off, the problem is corrected. Sounds like an electrical problem to me... Maybe ignition..., fuel pump????
Here is some additional info:
1. Air Force I - FIPK
2. Mike T's - Superchip
I do not want to rely on the DTC code that comes back from the OBD-II to resolve the problem. But it may offer a starting point....
Thanks,
Jim

You know all the standards, check all the fittings, tighten everything, change fuel filter...
If you don't want to wait on your code reader then go to Auto Zone and have them read it for you.
I just had a problem that turned out to be a fuse loose in the fuse panel. Was loosing contact sometimes????? How weird is that?
You really do need the code reader to start. Post results here and someone will surely be able to help...

It could be that the chip isn't making a proper connection to the computer.
Another thing to look into on the 5.4L is the IAC valve. They seem to stick quite frequently and this will cause the engine to loose power and sometimes even stall.
Or just live with it and thank God the Gremlin is just in the engine

Well... I have been having a lot of problems with my internal fuse panel, too... I have had the ABS/Brake light come on. I wiggle the fuse and presto, problem is fixed. I have also lost interior lights because the fuse is loose. I talked to a tech and the design on that internal fuse box is weird...... They use rolling bearings and springs to make the connections.
I changed the fuel filter at 50K. I will check the coils, PCV value today. When I figure out what is wrong, I will post........

Please do post any info on this problem. I've been having some of the same problems with my 98 f-150 4.6 v-8. I posted about a week ago but got no replys. I've had it in the Ford shop twice now and they claim it runs fine while they have it. Truth is that it only cuts out once in a while and then it will run fine for 5 or 6 days before I notice it happening again. Sometimes it will just stall long enough to feel like it has slipped out of gear and dropped back in again. Sometimes it stalls out completely both while on the freeway or stopped at a light. Then there are times that it will just not start at all but then a hour later it will start right up. Anyway, I'll be watching for replys.
thanks

Well..... as Murphy would have it, the problem has disappeared. I finally received by OBD II tool to read the error code and it hasn't popped up. I just drove 1100 miles from Dallas to Phoenix and not one problem with the engine. On a side note, I think the Superchip is starting to give me some problems especially with shifting (I'll ask Mike T about that one).
I averaged around 13.75 mpg at an average speed of 75 mph.
I do not know what I did to cure the problem. I would like to assume I fixed it, but I know it is just taking a nap.....
Here is what I did....
1, check out electrical/harness connections
2. Secure Superchip
3. Replace PCV
4. Unplug battery, drain residual voltage, plug it back in
After I did this, I did see the check engine light one more time when it stalled sitting in park in my driveway.
I haven't seen it for 3 days.
Sorry i don't have better info........ I rather be lucky than good sometimes....
