Why?

You are on your own there.

Just put in a 4.6 or 5.4

Cool

don't get discouraged, you will find mixed answers on this board. Not sure how many people have attempted this. Just know this, the 5.0 and the 4.2L have the same engine bolt pattern. So the 5.0 will bolt up to your tranny, but thats as far as I have gone in my research to find you an answer. Of course the stock 4.2L tranny might not hold its own behind a 5.0L but its worth a shot.

And the main reason why???? you wouldn't put a 4.6L or 5.4L in there is the cost, its just not worth it. And you can do a lot more to a 5.0 than you can to a modular motor. In time this may change but currently. And you can buy a complete 5.0 donor car for under 2k. So the swap won't be as painful.

That would be cool. I traded my 86 GT 5.0 (5-speed) for the F150. Often thought what that old 5.0 would be like in these rigs.... Changing spark plugs would be a whole lot easier!

Mitch, I would disagree on the plugs! The 5L is on the side of the block basically, bottom of the heads. The 4.6 is right on top, easy to get to!

There really is not a good reason to swap engines in these trucks. For HP to dollar, a blower is the way to go!

Wink

Matt90GT,

I wouldn't do it with a perfectly good engine (4.6 or 5.4), but since the post started with swapping a V6, that would be a bit more worthwhile. Still, a ton of work, and if you were really looking to get a push rod motor, I'd go for at least a 351. Do you think a 460 would squeeze in there?

As far as changing plugs...... I didn't have near as much trouble getting to the 5.0's as I did with the 5.4. I could do all 8 in the 5.0 in 30 minutes.... 4 hours for the 5.4.....

thanks for the information and the encouragement and discouragement. just to have the information of the transmission being the same bolt pattern is enough info for me to go ahead and try this conversion.( i already have a fresh 5.0 and all the needed wiring harness' to hook it up so the cost should not be to bad)) i was about to put this engine into an explorer. but know i will just put in my f150 and in time maybe, the 60,000 mile 4.2 will find it's way hooked to a c4 auto setting in my explorer. after i get the engine in my f150 i will list how easy or hard the conversion was, thanks.

if it works do it, a 5.0 is a heck of a lot less coin than a 4.6 and probably out performes it bone stock - but put some better heads on it and you still wont even come close to the price of a 4.6 and you will out power it, finally some low end tourque.

225 h.p. and 300 ft lb.s of torque in a full size truck will be nothing special.
but if you insist on trashing your truck consider a couple of thing.
if it is an automatic trans, the computer runs the trans - is it compatible? is the mustang oil pan going to fit? who is going to make the custom wiring harness? if you run a/c is it all compatible with what you have? is the 4.2 fuel pump strong enough? custom fuel lines? how much is a trip to the muffler shop going to cost? which throttle cable would you use? where are going to mount the mass air flow meter from the 5.0 at, where are you going to mount the air cleaner assembly?
good luck!

complete waste of your: time, money,a 5.0 and not to metion wasting the resale value of your truck.
the 5.0 in a mustang ran good, but in a truck it will be at best average.
swapping for a 5.0 is good bench racing talk but in reality it would stink.

I totally agree with Dave. There will be SO many headaches. if you had a manual, it may work out with the tranny, but you are going to have to fabricate motormounts, get the engine in the frame at the right length.

Then on to emissions, that is a big F there

If you are going to swap, buy a lightning engine and go for broke!

You might want to check your local laws as far as motor swaps and what is legal or not. I know for a fact most states have laws that say something to the effect that you cannot put an older motor in a newer vehicle. Smog reasons. The other way around is fine. I don't know how strict they are with emmisions in your state but just something to consider.

ANSWER: incredibly easy, small amount of knowledge, no prob, engine swap?

QUESTION: do you ever drive down the road and see those houses with like 4 non-running cars in the driveway?

From time to time i do see these non-running cars in driveways, but i have not seen any in mine. it's been a week and i have the f150 computer box and wires going to the
engine stripped out and have reinstalled the wiring harness from the mustang. the 5.0 is setting in place bolted to the transmission. i had to make motor mounts tha would extend to the front of the engine (to set the motor back to bolt to the transmission.) i seem to have plenty of header clearance, had to do a little shapping around the firewall so the upper plenium would not hit (it is almost hidden by the top of the firewall.) now i am waiting for fuel line ends to match the style used the 5.0 fuel rail. looks like i'm going to have to use the mustang a/c compressor, power steering pump, and alternator. i am going to try using my stock radiator w/an added electric fan. i have not cranked the engine up yet but i hope as soon as i solve the fuel line hook up problem i will be heading to my local muffler shop. thanks and if my truck ends up not running, i will send it to brotherdave because he must be quite familiar with the non-running type.
