2001L Ran Out of oil

I just bought a 2001L about 4 days ago , and decided to take a trip . It ran like a champ until the way home was going about 100 mph and started to slow down and wasn’t accelerating so I pulled over and noticed there was no oil ( filled it up before I left ). So i filled up the oil and now it runs like ****. When idle it shakes, and in 1st,2nd maybe 3rd gear also shakes. Also service engine light is on.

My questions is:

What happened to the oil?
Has anyone had this problem before, did I mess something up bad or a easy fix?

I plan to take it to the dealership tomorrow, but would like some insight before then. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jared

You probably burned the bearings and scored the cylinders. Sounds like your engine needs a rebuild or replacement.

If you didn't see the smoke blowing out the exhaust, then your oil probably leaked out. Could be loose filter, leak in oil pan, drain plug loose or any number of other things.

I would agree with Dennis.

I have a few question if you dont mind for my own interest.

1. Did the oil gauge not reflect a low oil pressure?
2. Did you not get an oil light on the cluster?
3. Did the check engine light not come on at all?
4. Did the engine temp gauge not reflect a high temp (needle pegged out)?

I am always watching my gauges so thats why I am asking. I figure if none of the gauges are going to tell me anything why are they even there?

Did the oil gnomes just steal all the oil? Where did it go?

That darned elusive oil. I am sure six sum odd quarts did not just take a taxi. So tell us WHERE DID IT GO? If it burned it you would not be able to see anything but white clouds in your mirror. If it leaked out, it would be noticable. How much did it take to fill it to capacity? Look for leaks, they will definantly be noticable. Sometimes the seal falls off the oil filter upon installation if it is not properly attatched. All of this has already been suggested, but tell us where that darned elusive oil went!!!

Thumbs down

An engine will talk to you (make noises) if it runs out of oil. Something here doesn't jive.

Uh, Yeah, your right. Lifters would peck at minimum, followed by other sorts of flying parts.
<ENGINE> light would come on, not <SERVICE ENGINE>
.... maybe its overfull now??

Plus, if it was leaking while he was driving it, there would be oil all over the place like you wouldn't believe. It's literally amazing what a spilt six quarts would look like. It would make the Valdez look like a small sprinkler accident. I blew an oil hose on my mustang at the track one time and by the time I saw the pressure gauge fluctuate and shut her down, the entire bottom of the car was completely covered. What a friggin mess. The air even brought it out from under the car and sucked it back up over the car to where the whole back end and window and everything was covered. It would have been physically impossible not to notice a leak bad enough to pump out all the oil...unless of course he was sleeping while he was driving????

First off what the H311 were you doing going 100 in a brand new car?!?!?!
You never want to do that with a new engine...wait untill atleast 4k miles. You can do some long term damage if you don't let the engine break in first.

2001 L. He prolly bought it used.

Bill Clinton only serves his own intrest, so he prolly didnt take the oil. I heard he bought a new condo in Florida though. How would you like to move in below him?

...and a 200lb intern drops to her knees at 3:00 in the afternoon.

**THUD**

So anyways, OP, what about that darned elusive oil....

Fill the oil up half way on the dipstick, bring it to the dealer, tell them "It runs funny". That's all.
Oh, and get your free loaner car.

LightingTruck:

LOL, that is a good one. Another suggesting is if it is ceased have it towed to the dealer in the middle of the night. Show up the next morning as if you had just arrived in it. Talk to the service rep. tell them you think there is a problem so come out and listen to it. When you go to start it and it dont crank over then you say "WTF, it was just running a little funny, uhhmmm doesnt seem to want to start now" "Call me and let me know when I can pick it up, thanks".

I wonder how long it would take for an engine to become scrap when it loses oil pressure at 100 mph? Seconds?
