OBD II help...
Hey all...
Yes, I'm wholly and entirely new to the Ford community. I usually drive Chrysler, but am fixing an F250 as a favor to my father-in-law and his business. The thing had an overactive alternator that fried a good deal of the engine sensors (I have a print out from the dealership that tells of a few of them...) and I need to find out, from the computer, which ones it is having trouble with.
Can you check the diagnostic codes without a scan tool? Chrysler lets you do that by turning the key on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-on and watching the MIL for numeric codes. Anything similar possible with the Ford OBDII system? or would I have to buy/rent a scan tool?
Thanks in advance for your help. I just got the factory manuals today and will be wading through them in the coming weeks.

Welcome to F150online. I don't believe Ford has the same as Chrysler with the key. If you have an AutoZone near you they will read the code for you for free and tell you what it might be. Otherwise you will need to use a code reader.

Welcome to the boards. No 96 and newer Fords do not have any kind of self-read type feature or even a cheap way to pull the codes yourself. You will have to get an OBD II compliant scanner to get them.
What years of Chysler does the key trick work on? I was thinking that only worked on 96 an older Chyslers. After 96 they all had to be OBD II compliant to federal guidelines. Let me know, I might learn something new.
