A/C compressor always on?

First off I know this is the engine forum but I know there are some real smart people who are always posting here and i think my best bet for an answer is here so don't let me down (no pressure).
Heres the story:
I have been noticing a puddle of water underneath the engine bay yet thinking nothing about it (condensation from the a/c unit). Well i guess the problem is that this puddle has been turning up regulaly everyday even when the a/c has not been used. I have been noticing a lack of power ..like the air has been running......anyhow....Now from what i understand the a/c compressor should turn off and on ONLY when a/c or max a/c is selected in the vehicle. What I have found is that the compressor is running in other dial positions too.
EX: From the OFF position to MAX A/C, A/C, PANEL/FLOOR, FLOOR/DEF and DEF the compressor will engage (assuming that the click in the engine bay is the compressor) . The "click" will not happen when PANEL or FLOOR are selected.
I am assuming this is not normal and it is an electrical issue.
Any leads, comments or even answers are appreciated.
thx carson

The floor/panel is what throws me. The compressor will engage anytime the Def is on as part of the humidiy remover to the best of my knowledge.

Your A/C compressor is functioning properly. It should engage in all modes except panel or floor. Any other mode or combination will have the A/C compressor engaging.

Did you put a container under the leak to verify that it is just a clear liquid as opposed to green coolant leaking out???

no..just tasted it. It is foresure H20. Why does the compressor engage if the air cond itsefl is not running and what would the condensation come from then if the system is not "compressing"...or is it?
thanks for the speedy replies.

The A/C system removes humidity from the air. Defrost uses this property to remove humidiy from the air, hindering condensation wanting to form on the windshield. If the defrost is on, the compressor will come on.

Ac works in ALL positions but three: Off, panel, or floor. Panel and floor is an AC on position. Sounds like system working well. I might add that not even the blasted salesman where I bought my trucks had this right when he was explaining it to me.

It goes even further than that! I'd pay money to find a sales guy that knows this:

All of the trucks are generically wired for the manual and automatic systems!

So what this means is that if you put your MANUAL selector on panel-floor and it is cold out side the compressor will not run but if it is hot it will! Or if it is hot outside and you turn the temp dial a little into the red it will cycle on and off to maintain a slightly warmer air temp. Again if it is cold out and you do the same thing the compressor won't run because the computer determines it is not needed.

Make sense?

cool isn't it! Fool around with it you will see!

Peace-
