lightning crate motor! will it work in my 97 f150-4.6L ?
lightning crate motor! will it work in my 97 f150-4.6L ?
i was offered a lightning crate engine for about the same cost as a kenne belle supercharger kit and i figured why not?
my 4.6L has 70,000 miles on it. BUT what are things will be necessary? like intercooler rad, bigger engine rad?
new harness and computer or will old harness and a superchip do the trick?
will the tranny bolt riteup? will it take the torque?
what else?

try the search, this question has been asked a number of times. the engine should bolt up to your tranny, but it might not hold up to the torque very well. aside from the engine i know you will need the computer and harness, but not sure what else. hopefully someone else can tell you what else is involved, good luck!
You would need a new tranny as well as a new rear end as the 8.8 that comes with the 4.6 wouldn't handle the extra power as the 9.75 rear end that you see on all 5.4 F150's
There was a pretty good thread on this forum posted within the last couple weeks on this that was answered by a guy who has done the same swap aswell as helped others with it. I belive we decided including the cost of the crate motor, L transmission, the bigger rear end, driveshaft, as well as the computer, wiring harness, radiator and everything else the price was between 10 and 15 grand to do the swap depending on which year you have. (I believe the pre 99's were the ones that cost more.) That would cost you atleast 5 grand for everything else you will need if you already have the crate engine.) For about 99.9% of us, that pretty much ended the conversation! :o
Also, many of the guys with superchargers have had to build up there transmissions at the very least without even adding as much horsepower as your talking about. The ones that haven't probably just haven't had to quite yet, and usually complain of terribly slow shifts. Your talking about adding 170 horsepower with an L crate engine which is an 80% increase from where your at. In the long run there's no way your existing drivetrain would hold up.

yeah your going from what stock 210-230 to an L crate hmm, lets see 380 -390 ..or a bolt on blower that will add around 80 hp not to mention the tranny diffrences and torque curves....ahhh parts everywhere!!!!!!!
Trending Topics
230 at flywheel =about 190 at rearwheels+ 80 =270 at the rear wheels
lightning is 36-380 at flywheel which= about 310-340 if u r lucky at the rear wheels
so for 40 hp -70 hp and maybe 70 lbs torque more than a typical blower install evrything is gonna just blowup in my drivetrain

cgk123,
I just posted in the thread, "swapping 4.6 for lightning, How?", to bring it back up to the top for your review. It should answer your questions. If it does not, I recommend contacting lightningsc, he has completed several of these swaps. His contact info is in the thread somewhere. Good Luck.

I belive $32,460. (That's what they stickered at here in the Dallas area last year.) I've gone and looked many times.
I keep waiting for that $12,000 off sale...

LOL I don't think you'd make a dollar off of it by the time you paid all the expenses... Besides who are you going to sell it to? Dealerships obviously aren't paying sticker price, and I wouldn't think individuals would not go to a dealership to save a few hundred bucks. (or less than that after your transport it here.)
Besides I wouldn't think getting a dealership to come off $900 off sticker would be that hard to find...
