Sounds like "vapor lock". Not sure on all the physics of it, but there is some point when the fuel in the line gets so hot, it forms bubbles or something and then you basically have air in the line. This "bubble" just hangs there and prevents the normal fuel flow from reaching the carb.

Maybe way off base here, but that's just my understanding of it. Only way to resolve it is to let it cool down or move the fuel lines away from the engine as far as possible.

Good Luck.

I think it's the fuel pump.
I had a 1985 Ford Thunderbird with the 5.0 and a 1985 Olds Calais, and both had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pump. Good Luck !!

Question heat related fuel prob?

went to Phoenix last weekend, 106 stinkin' hot degrees. Truck started to lose power, got off interstate, it died. Would restart, run really rough for 2-8 seconds, die. Repeat dozen times. Switched to rear fuel tank, ran good. Switch to front, die. Switch to front that evening when cool, ran good. Filter? Pump? Thoughts?

I know that in 89 they had a recall for the valves that switch from one tank to the other. That could also cause your symptoms.

ZRHINO,

I read an article a while back about the same symptom. It turned out that the fuel tank evaporative emission control line and/or gas tank cap was plugged or faulty. One purpose of the evap line permits the tank to breathe (so to speak) and allow air to be pulled into the top area above the fuel level in the tank, while fuel is being pulled out, thereby reducing a vacuum build-up. You state that there's no problem with the other tank. I would rule out a fuel pump problem because the pump is able to suck/push gas from other tank. A vacuum condition could be occuring in the one tank, causing a decreased flow of fuel. An opposite force (vacuum) could get to the point where it counteracts the pump working pressure. While driving, your truck ran crappy off of the one tank...then at a stop, the engine quit. The obstruction could be liquid fuel in the evaporative lines caused by overfilling that one tank when you visited the gas station prior to your Phoenix trip.
It might be worth it to unhook the overflow line to see if there's an accumulation of fuel present. The line should attach to the tank filler neck and then runs along the frame to the engine compartment.
Note: If both tanks share the same line...then this theory is blown out the window.
Hope this helps....I'm curious to know what you find out. Please post once you've resolved it.
Good luck!
