Question Mass Air Flow Sensor Upgrade?

My check engine light shows I may need to replace my MAS pretty soon. (According to dealer) Are there any reasons to upgrade to a different than stock one?

You shouldn't have to get one different than stock. I would ask the service rep why it needs to be replaced, because sometimes they just need to be cleaned. All the sensor does is meter the amount of air going through the intake. It does this by measuring the temp across the little wires. The colder the wires relative to the ambient temp the more airflow, and vice versa when the wires are warmer less airflow. If something gets on the wires it gives false readings, and can cause the engine to run too rich or too lean. An aftermarket MAS unit might have a price advantage over the unit from FORD.

Cool

If they pulled a code off that said "Replace MAF pretty soon", I'd be sure to run back and see that one. The factory one is plenty large for most applications. What is the vehicle type and symptoms?

98 Expy XLT 4x4 with 4.6 motor. I kinda figured they were full of crap, so I told them not to bother. I have a K&N FIPK, so I think the sensor may just have been dirty.

Spray the wires with some Carb/Injector Cleaner. Let it dry a few minutes before driving.
I have done this and a friend that had a check Engine LIght because he used to much oil on his K & N Filter has done this. You have nothing to lose.

kptaylor- I don't know what symptoms you're having, but codes are not displayed that way. Step one is cleaning. Not all cleaners are safe to use. Windex on a Q-tip is recommended by Pro-flow. With the K&N FIPK you can also expose the MAF wires to rubbing easier; check that as well.
