Buy the kit and follow the instructions. Should only take about 30 minutes. Autozone has a K&N cleaning kit with spray-on type oil and other places have a K&N cleaning kit with a bottle of liquid oil. I think with all the thought about over oiling the filter that the spray-on type would be the way to go. I personally have not used the spray-on yet, but have the kit. Maybe from when I had the K&N on the late mustang. DO NOT CLEAN THE FILTER WITH ANYTHING ELSE BUT A K&N CLEANING KIT AND RE-OIL WITH K&N OIL. Any other cleaning or oiling method will not do the job correctly. I've had K&N filters on at least 3 different cars for over a period of 8 years and used the correct method to clean and re-oil without any problems on any of them.

Cleaning the K&N is very straight forward. Just follow the instructions on the kit just as the previous replies state. You can find the cleaning kits at most any auto parts store. The key to a K&N filter is not to clean it too often...they actually work better when they are a bit dirty. I think they only call for it to be cleaned every 50K miles. Hope this helps.
