Question K&N Air Filter

I just installed a K&N air filter in my '97 F-150 with 115,000 miles. I would have loved to get an FIPK, but couldn't shell out that much cash right now. I know there are a lot of posts reguarding this, but all the information is overwhelming. I switched to K&N for better performance. Is there anything else I should do (airbox mods, etc), or just drop the K&N filter in place of the stock.

Thanks,

Billy

Yeah bcoyle, I just seem to be following you all over. I did the same thing. I just dropped in the K&N and have left it at that. I've changed the plugs too, but that's about all (and the cat back exhaust). Basically, it all depends on your budget. I've seen the airbox mods and would say that would be a good place to start. I'm just not ready to start cutting on my rig yet. But that will probably be the first thing I do when I decide to do more. There are computer chips, headers, larger injectors, blowers, and on and on. $$$$ is the biggest thing. And I have enough of that in the truck already!! That was just to purchase it!!!

I've attempted to change the plugs before. Then started to the other night. Can't seem to get the darn plug wires off. I've heard people say things about using channel locks and stuff, but I don't want to mess up wires (wasn't planning on replacing them). At 115,000 miles, the plugs probably need changing something awful. How did your plug fiasco go?

Thanks,

Billy

I just detailed my adventures in a post called "spark plugs". I think I hit most of the highlights. It sounds like you have the 4.6, due to your plug wire comment. I don't have them with the 5.4, but I still had to deal with the individual coils. I've heard there is a special wrench that is designed to pull the wires off the plug without destroying them. Some kind of "forked" gadget. Not sure where or what it really is..... Just remember to allow pleanty of time, and it helps if you have small hands!!

Talking Cut the airbox!

I took the half that goes into the quarter panel and cut it with a hacksaw and then put it back on. About 1 inch of the filter sticks out the end. I got the idea from someone on here, but don't remember who.

It seems to suck!!
