Well it's in, drove it a little and it doesn't sound quite so restricted. And I don't have to change it soon. Excellent.

No. Just dropped in the K&N in place of the stock unit. Should I have done otherwise?

Take out the air silencer, give's you even less restriction and better than FIPK IMO. Still looks stock too!

Don't forget to remove the snorkle silencer too...the K&N is basically worthless unless you do. Do a search for, "Ultimate Airbox Mod."

That's it man...take it off, and either replace it with a 3" to 3" Fernco coupler or butch the airbox.

Has anybody done both of the mods to their airflow setup (removing second half of airbox and removing the internal silencer elbow)

I'm wondering how loud it is before I cut it out of the external compartment. Can someone whose done this elaborate?
thanks

I've done both...it's not that loud...even with the hood up. I'm only talking about stomping it and getting the rushing sound...it's silent during actual driving. I cut the fender side of the airbox at the point where it starts to taper so it acts as a heat / moisture shield.

I picked up the Fernco, but i'm not really satisfied with how it installs. Is there a way it can be made to fit better into the existing fender hole? I suppose you enlarge the fender hole to fit the Fernco, and i suppose it doens't make a whole lotta sence to reduc back down to that size either and have it fit inside the hole. Mine fits pretty good except for on the under side it's not totally tight against the fender wall. I know it really isn't a major deal, just curious i guess.

Hey man, the Fernco should fit PERFECTLY OVER the hole. Here's what I did. Take the fender side of the airbox out, remove the snorkle, take one of the rings off of the Fernco, and leave one on...slide the Fernco way up on to the end of the airbox making sure the other ring is on this side, reinstall the airbox into the truck, drop in the K&N. Now, work the Fernco down the airbox toward the fender opening, until it firmly seats tightly against the fender. It should seal all the way around TIGHTLY, with no deformation of the Fernco at all. It helps to get both hands on it, and force it against the fender, then tighten the ring down TIGHT. After about 30 of messin' with it for the first time, it should fit perfectly. Just lift up on the airbox so as to tilt it upward, and push the airbox away from the fender, and push downward to position the Fernco over the hole. It won't move, once dialed in properly. Check it to make sure it's still perfectly round, and seals the hole. After a while, you'll get it...I could probably do it again in about 5 minutes TOTAL. Just recheck it every few days for a week or two to make sure you got it right, but it won't hurt anything otherwise, even if it does open up to the inside of the engine compartment. I ended up cutting off my airbox all together a few weeks ago and it really doesn't make a difference. Shoulda left it alone, but it somehow stays cleaner this way. See, with the Fernco, you can take air in, though the entire fender area, when before, it was restricted, AND only allowed air in from the extreme outer part of the fender. It also would help to remove the small plastic trim from between the bumper, and the headlight on the driver's side. If you spend some time examining this whole area, you'll see that the air would rush straight into the fender area with this piece removed. Hope this helps.

It's with that K&N, that when you hit the gas, the butterfly opens up and the engine SUCKS in much much air. The noise is the more air moving through the filter faster than was before.

At least, this has been my experience. I put the K&N in at 5K miles and just cleaned it at 20K ( didn't need it, I'm just ****). I also massacared my airbox, exposing the filter. gave me a little more low end torque resulting in a little better pickup

Would you mind sharing how you modified (or as you put it, massacred) your airbox? I was thinking about using Steve Wroblewski's idea (see Tech Articles section), but I would like to see what you did as well. Thanks for the info!

Take the whole intake out from the fender, to the throttle body. Remove the elbow silencer, (I assume you've seen the tech. article on this) take the fender side airbox half off and either cut it even with the two feet (pegs) on the bottom, or at the end, where it starts to taper down. Reinstall, and drop in K&N. Enjoy.
