Post serious problem with 4.2 v6. Help?

1997. F150 4.2L V-6. 63000 miles. Driven daily. 40 mile round trip, mostly interstate. Oil and filter changed every 3k.

Problem 1. Intermittently runs rough and occasionally dies. Feels like real dirty injectors. After it dies, it will start immediatly and run good. Cleaning injectors, R&R fuel filter has no effect. It has been doing this since I bought the truck at 35,000 miles.

Problem 2. Uses excessive oil. Am not seeing blue smoke. There are no leaks. Will eat a quart every 500 miles with no apparent path of leaving engine. Tail pipe is black. There is no oil in the coolent.

Observation 1. The rough running and filling the oil to capacity seems to coincide.

Does anyone have an experience with such a problem and have a recommendation for repair/troubleshooting? I'd like to dump it in Ford's lap but you and I both now that they are not gonna fix it on their nickel. (assuming it is a major prob/defect that is their doing)

Question

I'm having the same problem with my 4.6
the oil is going somewhere and i dont know where, i checked the same things that you checked and found nothing. But can change my oil and in about 2-1/2 months it will not even show any oil on my dip stick, and then the check engine light comes on and the truck start to run very rough. if you find any answers to these question please let me know. thanks
