Check engine light on

I have a '97 F150 and the check engine light keeps keeps coming on and then goes back off again! It seems to be running great and I don't see any difference in fuel usage. Any ideas?

engine light

Had the same prob with my 97. Changed the O2 sensors on the exhaust pipes and fixed the problem. If you haven't had the sensors replaced since new, thats probably what it is.

yup Wolf thats what its got to be. Had problems with my o2's at 40KM. Pretty uncommon but as soon as I told the service guy at the dealership, it was the only answer he could come up with and sure enough thats what it was.

Don't just assume that it is O2 sensors and replace a bunch of them because they may be fine, I have 74000 miles on my 97 and have never replaced them. I have had three times that my check engine light has flashed. Every time it starts to run rough and the light flashes and then stays on. What this is is an engine misfire. I just disconnect the battery to clear the code and once it relearns the idle all is well.

yeah i had a light go on then go off after a while when driving....it was a running lean code which turned out to be bad coil packs...so get the code checked before changing parts ...being a 97 like mine your packs may be getting weak also.....
