Post 1987 F150 runs rough

I've got a 1987 F150, 67000 original miles, idles rough, sometimes stalls after sputtering for a few seconds. The engine is the 6 cyl. with EFI. I 'm thinking EGR or PCV valve. Any other ideas?

When my 89 4X4 did that it was just the plug wires. The wires were only about 2 1/2 years old but were arcing out, causing the plugs to misfire.

I'm relaying info. that was given to me about this problem from my son, sorry for the confusion. It seems the rough running is not an idle problem, but an acceleration problem. It sputters and sometimes stalls when stepping on the gas, but only happens quite intermittently. I took it for a test drive and it ran fine for me.

has it been a while since you had a tune up? (pcv valve, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor). it could also be a clogged or dirty fuel filter. good luck

Thanks for your input. It has new plugs, wires, and fuel filter. I plan on replacing the PCV valve. Not sure when (if ever) the dist. cap and rotor was replaced, just bought the truck off my mother-in-law.

I could think that the dist is suspect, after all you just replaced the TFI, and bad hall sensor will cause that failure(I have a check for that(hall sensor)) , another area to check, did you recently clean the engine? some of those connecters had a coating of di-electric grease and when removed the terminals start to corrode.Have you checked the fuel pressure? Any starting issues? fuel pump relays? If you could, please provide some consise signs and symtoms, it will make a dianosis much easier.EGR is a possiabilty, however I think you would get a check engine light. If it was carboned up(hung up) it would present the same all the time, and if the actuator was suspect, I think it would trigger a check engine light.----------------

Thanks for your post jstang. Please remember now, I consider myself a novice do-it-yourself mechanic, some of the terms go right over my head. I'm relaying info. about how the truck runs from my son. I took it for a test drive and it ran fine for me, so I don't consider this an emergency like my TFI module and a few weeks before that the alternator went.

I haven't cleaned the engine, no check engine light comes on, haven't checked the fuel pressure or relays either and no starting problems now. Not much else to go on until I can be in the vehicle when this problem happens.

I'm going to replace the PCV valve since it's cheap and I know it's old. I sure wish I could find a shop manaul, helm.com is all out, and the Haynes or Chilton manuals aren't as detailed as I'd like.

I'll have to checjk the garage, and see if I still have a manual from the 87.

Mike,
I had a '90 5.8l Bronco that started to run similar to the way you have discribed. I took it to the dealership to have the injectors cleaned and the mech told me to save my money, go to Schucks (or where ever you want) and get a can of spray carb cleaner. With the engine off, take the air intake tube off the throttle body, open it a bit and spray it out, paying special attention to any little "holes" you see inside. Let it set for about 3-5 minutes, start it up (may take a few seconds for it to start), then while operating the throttle by hand spray the cleaner in, keeping enough revs so it doesn't die.
I hope that helps, I know it worked for me.
