What to do first
First post...I have read most of posts on chips, exaust, K&N.. what about spark plugs.. and also in what order do you get this stuff?? I have a 2000 4.6 4x4 with 80,000 mils and toe a 20 ft boat (want more power) but have limated funds. Most miles are highway except during hunting season.....pic of truck is in galleries under Ricdeb havent figered out how to put it here... as you can see I need help...lol
Before you get the chp, think about what other mods you want to do.
If you get a chip out of the gate, there are mods that will require that you reburn your chip, and this costs cash.
If you have any questions, goto the suporting vendor section, and talk with them. Mike at PPI seems to post alot on these, he is a SuperChip distributer.
Some examples :
Trans kit, if you go the route of a TransGo ( for example, I do not have one of these ) then this needs to be taken into account in the chip. Or if you got the route of a Valve upgrade like a Factory_Tech or Lentech ( depending on you trans type ) this also needs to be taken into account.
There are other mods that need to be taken into account, and I do not have a comprehensive list of them, but these ar a few off the top of my head ( along with MAFS upgrades and T/B upgrades I seem to recall )
Best bet...as a Supporting vendor that sells chips they would know what is and is not applicable to chip programing, and give you an idea of what order to do things in to minimize the cost in reburns.
I have yet to get a chip, as I am going to get a Lentech valve upgrade for my 4R70, and before I dump the cash into a burn, I want to get all this out of the way.
Just food for thought, and if you are only getting a chip, then getting it first ( and last then ) is the corect otder, or if you have an additional $100.00 ( I think this is the reburn cost ) per mod to toss into a reburn then the order does not matter..you money you can spend it any way you want to.
Just want to try to save you a bit of cash, this is just one of the many things I learned on this board

I almost wasted a few 100.00 myself, until I did some reading through the posts in the chip forum, and asked the tuners questions.
Just call them to confirm which is which for chip reburns, and you should be ok.
Rick,
Like I told you in my private E-mail, there are lots of opinions and lots of Mod's. I talked to JP and he can take care of you no matter what your needs are. And since you said limited funds and what mod first, A chip is clearly the best bang for the buck. If you do something later, it can be re-burned for no charge, so it's a no brainer. But then again so is a aftermarket Filter, so consider that too, even if it's just a K+N replacememt for the stock Air Box.

MOST tuners do not charge for reburns. Keep this in mind when you decide to buy one
If you are limited on funds the chip is the way to go.
Getting exhaust and a K&N after you get a chip will not require you to a get a reburn, normally.

A lot of good advice here. I would like to throw in my opinion.
You might have come across the term "three best bang for the buck mods". For around a grand (give or take) you can get yourself the chip, intake and exhaust. Will you see considerable gains? No. You will see a fair amount of gain, wich I believe is right on par with the $$$ spend. The three are basicly non evasive, reletively easy to install mods.
People are right, if you think you might do some of the more evasive mods, ones that change mechanical things, then you might want to wait on the chip.
There are a ton of things we can do to these trucks. The more you read the more you will want. It's pretty easy to drop some big dollar after hanging out here for a while. You are starting off on the right foot. Get all the info and opinion you can. Take your time, take all this info and try to make informed decisions on what you will do. We're here to help out if we can!
Welcome aboard! Have fun!
