I guess I am lucky. My first fill-up was 13.5mpg in town and 2nd was 14.8mpg in town. Only have 560 miles so far. Haven't really got on it yet though.

Post Engine Break In Period

At what mileage would an engine be considered "broken in"? Also, at what mileage should it loosen up enough to see an increase in gas mileage. My 2001 S-crew 5.4l 4x4 has 2200 miles on it now, I am getting about 13 mpg in town. I am wondering if and when it will go up if at all. I run the recommended 5w-20 oil and I drive very easy. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't expect you get much more than 13 in town. That's probably about on par with 18 on the highway or so.

I think that the engine is completely broken in @ 10,000 miles.

got 2200 on it and tanks have been--13.1-13.1-13.2-13.7 and since i'm puting on the mods now i don't expect any better.
i'd say it should be broken in at 5000--at least years ago they said it was at that milage.

I typically get about 14.5 +/- around town. No mods other than KN drop in. I have the Screw with 5.4 with 3.55. I drive moderately and cruise about 70-80 on the short trips over the causeway. We're leaving on a 3 week road trip to Maine and I sure hope to be getting in the 18+ range!

5W-20 Oil? Are you sure? My 2000 F-150 XC 4x4 w/5.4L calls for 20w-30. I doubt that it makes a difference to the mileage though. My truck has averaged 13.7mpg over 22K mi. with every drop recorded. The driving has been about 70% city, the rest freeway with an occasional 4x4 beach fishing trip thrown in.

5W-20 is spec'd for the 2001 models and if I'm not mistaken, Ford also says it's also okay to use it in older engines.

Yep, 5w-20 right on the oil fill cap and in the owners manual.

Talking

I've got 6200 miles on the 5.4L and I'm getting between mid 13's to mid 14's driving in the Denver metro area. I have just resently added an Airforce 1 and changed to Amsoil to see if I can a little better mileage in town. I did do a little road trip and got 15.2 MPG combined. Armed with that knowledge, low to mid 16's on the open road is probaly as good as it will get.
AHHHHH WTF, I did not buy it for the gas mileage anyway.

But I do have OT question Scott. Could you tell me who at Phil Long in the Springs you were working with on your radiaor issue. I've been working with Courtesy Ford in Littleton and they think it is a definite maybe that a problem might exsist.
could you could e-mail with that?

Thanks,

DB

I just filled up for the third time this morning and with 709 miles I got 16.08 mpg. About 30 highway, 70 city. I am very pleased. Have kept RPM's below 2000 when cruising, only time abovethatis acceleratin, and only then to about 3000.
