My darn smog

Well I looking for ideas, I went to get my truck smog last week, and in pretest it passed, then it fail the guy tried to figure it out but he couldn't ( he can't explain the reason it failed) then I went to a test only station here in California, were the guy again told me that everything look good at 15mph and then at 25 mph it failed he had some ideas but he can't do any work. I have an appoinment at another place to look for the problem. I'm here to see if anyone here had a similar problem. my truck is 97 auto 4.6l xlt with 80k miles. There have been a few times when the truck had a surge when I was stopped at a light or at very slow speed.

TIA

Cool

Tia, have you done a complete tune-up lately on the truck. Sometimes a good tune-up helps with the emission tests. Technically, I wouldn't think that a truck so young would have a problem passing My '94 passed with flying colours, I did do a tune-up before the test though too so I am not sure how much, if anything that had to do with it. Sorry I couldn't be much more help.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

HI Welcome!

There are alot of parts all working together to get cleaner emissions. You'll know soon enough whats wrong.

I havent failed a smog on my last 3 Ford trucks...always did the required maintenance/service. Maybe ive just been lucky?

Recent smog on my 99SC, they hooked up and scanned OBDII...(no tail pipe probe or emission print out) It passed again..print out said OBDII...no malfuntion light on, Passed. very simple printout.
We have to smog every year here. If non-OBD, they use tail pipe probe with emission print out.

Curious...do they smog same way in Ca? If so, maybe that scan will show what caused the failure. i.e.bad emission part.

Good luck...OT

Cool

A tune up will help, along with some 02 sensors. Another thing I've heard that will help is to change your oil before you take it to the inspection place. Still another is to go out and drive the truck for a short road trip. This will make sure any residual stuff gets burned off. 10 to 20 miles of extended highway driving should cover it.,,,,,98
