'99 Expy was smooth until 2,500 miles then suddenly had slight roughness at idle like a misfire. The interesting part is the engine was replaced at 12,000 miles (block and heads) but the rough idle remained.

'01 Expy now has 4,000 miles and is still smooth.

All 3 engines have had a tapping sound comming from the passenger side lower, worse when hot, more of a bell like sound than a slap.........?

[Really tired of the samo old idle problem. 2001 4.6, today disconnected the battery for afew minutes to see if adaptive computer is the problem. The rough idle stoped. Wonder if this is why computer chip buyers say it is better. I would be curios to see how the fair after 5000 miles. Guess I will just have to reset this thing ever 5000. Hope my mialege does not go down. 6000 miles and 16.4 mpg. I am an easy driver and my route is low traffic and about 45 miles per hour. Any cooments.

Angry Bump

I am still having this problem and it's driving me nuts.
Has your problem been fixed in the meanwhile?

What could possibly wrong with the motor mounts.
The bolts were loosened(gr! sp!) and tightend again but no effect.

99SC 4.6L (RPHO) A/T 32000mi. Not quite as smooth as new, but not annoying. No engine miss. A/T still good.

cybweed,
Yes I have the famous rough idling engine also. You can find my tread here also in the engine section. I have tried many things and nothing seems to help. All I can say is keep checking back and and one day hopefully someone will come up with a permanent fix. Good luck.

Angry Rough Idle

I have an '01 F150 with a rough idle. My dealer said that Ford told him it was an out of balance fan clutch. He replaced it and still didn't help. Recalibrated the PCM and it helped for about 1 week. It is idling rough again. I wish Ford would get off their butts and find a solution for the problem. Maybe we could send Ford this thread, plus get together with FordTruckWorld.com and Ford Truck Enthusiasts and have them send their posts about the problem to show Ford that collectively we make up a huge group of people that have this problem.
