Hi there!
I'm pretty sure you have heard of Prolong engine oil additive. I'd like to know your opinion and everyone else's...

Thanks

Stay away from it. Prolong contains a high amount of chlorine. Yes, chlorine. Chlorine is good in the proper amounts for protection from shock loads in low heat applications. But, in the high heat of a motor and with the by-products of combustion, the chlorine will form hydrochloric acid. And you know what hydrochloric acid can do to metal.

Oil manufactures spend millions of dollars in research and development. (Even low grade oil manufactures)

Oil is a complex blend of Additives, and Basestocks that are designed to work together to protect your equipment.

With that in mind any aftermarket additive can upset this fine balance and cause the additves to not work properly.

As said above, prolong containes some nasty stuff, and yes it is a very good extreme pressure lubricant, but at the cost of causing problems later on in your vehicles life.

Actually oil used to come with clorinated parrifins in it(about 3%) this was in the 1930's. Then it was discovered that it also turned into hydrocloric acid when exposed to heat, moisture and combustion. Since that time the clorinated parrifins were taken out.

I repeat, do not use any aftermarket additives with your oil!

Use a top quality oil and filter. If you want more protection take a look at synthetics(synthetic basestocks have a higher film strenght) which will protect under more severe conditions, both hot and cold, as well as towing and racing and other severe applications.

Change oil and add Prolong..........when next oil change is due drain the oil, don't add oil. Since the Prolong soaks into the metal the engine will run fine without oil. At least that is what I got out of the infomercials. I can't believe Al Unser Sr would endorse such nonsense.

Z-max is also under investigation also. It's bleach, too! It's still on the shelves of many auto parts stores though. The investigation also found that their transmission and other additives were tinted mineral oil, LOL! Don't put anything in your engine besides oil and gas,,,,98

Anyone remember the Prolong Commercial where they had a "Duel In The Desert" where there were various cars running in 100+ temperatures on a road race track. They all were treated with Prolong then the oil was drained out. Very interesting. All of the cars appeared to be running on NO oil.

Unless it's fuel injector cleaner (and some of those are dubious) don't bother. They're all "snake oil".
