Remote Oil Filter Installed With Pictures
I installed a Perma-Cool remote filter kit on my SuperCrew. A couple things. This thing was not nearly as easy as i thought it would be to install. I think the part that took the longest was geting the remote filter mounted. I wanted it mounted vertical, instead of the old stock horizontal position. I installed it behind
front driver's side of the bumper. Another thing i discovered was that i really had to tighten both the plate on the engine block and the filter on the new mount to get them to stop leaking. When i finished the first time, drove it, and checked for leaks, it was definitely leaking! Not horrible, but non the less, oil was escaping from the the filter gasket and the adapter plate. I was worried about hose fittings leaking, but that wasn't the issue at all. After a bit more tightening, the leaks have stopped. Here are some pictures.

Tony,
What type of hoses and fittings are you using. Is this recommended by permacool??
It just startles me to see a regular hose clamp on a high pressure oil system.
I would feel more comfortable with hydraulic type fittings.
Also that bend comming off the top of the filter housing looks pretty tight, I would prefer to use either 45 or 90 fittings.
Find you a hydraulic shop that carries Parker Hanifin fittings. Also make sure your hose is rated for the job. I am using 500psi hose with a really high temp rating. (for industrial hydraulic systems)
What I would do is run a 45 degree off of the adapter at the block, then run a 90 degree and 45 degree from the filter housing, that way you have no chance of kinking
If for some reason those hoses kind (ie collapse) you will be screwed becuse your engine will not get any oil.
BTW I do like that Mobil 1 filter. Good Choice.

This all came as a kit from permacool. I'm actually not sure what the psi of the hose is rated at, but i don't think they would supply something that was inferior. I'm sure it's at least 300 psi rated. As for clamps, yes they are pretty much your basic hose clamp, but i really don't see it being an issue of them coming loose or not being able to hold the pressure.
As for the bend in the hose, i might agree with you there. I had one hell of a time getting it so i wouldn't have any chances of kinking. I did use 90° fittings on top of the filter, and the only thing permacool recommended was to make sure not to have anything tighter than a 5" diameter turn in the hose. Mine isn't that tight, and i think that one photo might be deceiving.
I have heard of others using a stainless braided hose, which i suppose might be a good but expensive idea if worried about bursting/kinking.

Those hoses are rated at 300 PSI - way more than you need for the 80 PSI oil pressure. I've had the kit on for a couple of months now - no problems. I covered the hoses with polypropolene, high temp wire loom just for some added protection and I added an engine cut-off switch at the adapter plate just in case anything ever happened.
