fuel pump keeps running
92 f150 5.8 - Started two weeks ago. One morning starts good, runs good, another morning idles high then, then real low for about 5 minutes,If I don't let idle the engine bogs down and pops when gas applied and drives slow. Yesterday it did that, I turned it off, an hour later went to start, all I could hear is the fuel pump continously running and the truck will not start, still doing it this morning. Gas is getting the fuel line. Any Ideas Thanks

How long since you've changed your fuel filter? Spark plugs? Hard to say without being there but if it is a fuel system problem there are not many things that could be wrong. If its neither of the above I personally would check the pump itself, sending unit.
I've replaced plugs & wires, pump last year, the fuel filter about a year and half ago. I disconnected the fuel line at the back of the engine, gas is getting through. I read a archive where someone else had a simular problem, he said it was the Processor(I guess that's the computer).
Thanks

Yes if its not those it could be the computer but before that I would check the 02 sensors, if one is bad it could ask for more fuel or not enough or just say OK to crappy data. It makes me wonder why no engine lights came on.
eakanator,
I've had this problem with a '88 Turbo Coupe T-bird and my brother-in-law has it with his '89 F150. It's a faulty solenoid that tells the fuel pump to stop running when the engine is shut off. The fuel pump will continue to run until the battery dies. Until you have it repaired, you'll have to disconnect your battery every time you shut it off (which is a very bad thing to do, not to mention that it's a pain in the butt). I can't 100% guarantee that this is your problem (haven't heard of a current-model F150 doing this), but it's where I'd start. Hope this helps. Later!

Where is the solonid located? The pump will only starts running when I turn the key in the on position, in the off position it does not start. I don't know if it won't start because the engine is overloaded with gas or not. I started to get a fuel Pressure regulator today at Advanced, but the guy said that would not make the pump run continuously, that it only regulates the flow of gas.
Thanks for the tip.

eakanator,
I believe your fuel pump relay is in need of replacing. I had a relay go out in my 91 Ford Bronco (5.8L V8), it caused it not to start. When I picked it up from the garage I asked the mechanic if I should just replace all the Relay's, he said they should be fine, but if I heard the fuel pump running when the vehicle is off I should bring it back to him and he would replace that relay and whatever other ones were going also. The Relay's if I remember correctly are located on the drivers side under the hood...there should be a black plastic cover that they attach to from underneat. I hope I helped a little, maybe someone else will come along with more info.

is your fuel pump relay working? its under the hood on the drivers side against the firewall. look in the owners manual for more info, this could be the reason it won't start. Turn on key and listen for running pump and remove relays until it stops that will be the one. I think they are interchangeable but i am not to sure. lol

relay - look towards the fire wall, just back of your air filter housing, black metal bracket with plastic cover where your pcm relay and fuel pump relay are (also trailer tow on some) i would replace both (pcm and fuel)as ford has updated these relays

I replaced the fuel pump relay. I turned the key on, the fuel pump done normal, ran for a couple of secondsand cut off, the truck started and ran good. I put the old relay back in, and the pump worked properly to, the truck started and ran good. Right now it's starting, with either relay. after I cut it off, sounds like pressure is released by a valve near the rail. What is the PCM relay? Afterwards I replaced the fuel filter. Very Strange.
Thanks for everyones input, I'm still leary of it, Tomarrow it may be back not starting..

PERHAPS THERE WAS A BAD CONNECTION WHERE THE RELAY PLUGS IN?? AND BY YOU REMOVING IT FIXED IT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PCM RELAY IS BUT SOMEONE HERE WILL FILL YOU IN I AM SURE.
WEIRD **** HAPPENS!!!! LOL

leave the new relay in for the fuel pump (should be a new one (all black) old non updated (green or brown ) one is pcm and the other is fuel cant remember wich but a good idea to replace both with the update ones (two diff part numbers). Gennerally the fuel pump draw over time causes the relays to stick internally , dont always do it all the time. Reason i sugested changing both is just due to the cost and better to have two new ones

Made an appointment with Ford to bring the truck in and run codes. It started fine Wednesday night & Thursday night. This morning went to start it to take it Ford and guess what, fuel pump kept running and truck would not start, just turned over & over. I can't believe it, Started so good last night like nothing was wrong. Maybe a couple more days and maybe it will start again.

Sold the truck about 4 years ago, but I think it was a sensor I replaced. It was causing the computer to read wrong or it could have been the computer.
Found that by spraying starter fluid in the throat it would start and run though at least for that day.
think I even replaced sensor under the carb. but can't remember the name of it right now..
Sorry I can't be much more help.. Kept having a lot of trouble with it sensors, transmissions, etc..
