Question Where is the Redline

Just noticed that my tachometer does not have a red or orange marking indicating the redline. It just black and white all the way up to 6000. Have others noticed this as well? All the other vehicles that I have owed or been in have the redline indicated. Weird...

Cool

On my truck "99 4.6 5 speed the truck will not do anymore than 5200rpm's in any gear! The top end is at 3200 in 5th gear at 97mph.Its all computer controlled. This is my experience on my truck, don't know if this will help or not?

the PCM (computer) shuts it down about 5200 to 5400 rpm so they have built-in "redlines".

I think redlariat is right. The fuel shut off (rev limiter) is about 5400. Not even a chip would raise that, and shouldn't. Hey, all the power is below there anyway.

I've looked it up... it's 6150 for the 5.4 and 6250 for the 4.6. The computer will let it rev that high if you lock it in low and slam on it. I personally wouldn't try it, but I've seen it done before... no power at those revs, so there really is no point

I first noticed that the was no marked redline on the test drive of my truck I have always wondered but, never wanted to test that point. 6250 rpm's is a lot of revving for a little V8 to turn.

There is no point in indicating a red line on the tach if there is no chance of letting the engine over-rev it. The computer shuts it down before it destroys itself, unlike older carbeurated(?sp) engines. That seems to be the way thi industry is going... I guess it makes sense. I mean, why would it be needed? Now, before everyone jumps down my back, I know it can be a handy visual reference on a manual trans, but even then, is it essential?

My guess:
The red line indicator was for the driver to keep from over revving the engine, before all the computer controls. Now there is a handy dandy computer to keep people from killing their engine, by over revving. I thought it strange at first, there being no redline. I've learned a lot here though. The tach is a good idea. Now it is more important to watch that you stay within the usable power range rather than watching how close you are to blowing the motor.
Family Ride, Im thinking I saw on the "computer chips" board that the rev limit goes from 5400 to 5700 with the chip. I guess it dosn't make any difference, thats past the power curve.
Well like I said, my guess.
