Stupid question on oil consumption

Ok, I know for many of you with lots of experence with engines this may be a stupid question but I would like to ask it anyway and learn something. I do know one way an engine consumes oils is from bad rings. But with new engines like ours, or say with 10,000 or 20,000 miles on it why do some consume oil while others don't?

As far as i know its just luck with how the rings, valve guides and valve stem seals wear in.

So would that mean a motor that consumes oil will not last as long as one that doesn't (rings, seals etc not as tight a tolerance, so perhaps more wear)?

i dont think it has anything to do with how long it will last. (as long as you dont let it get too low in oil)

That is one thing I will never let happen. I always check the oil level among other things. Either you are at work being bad as I am (on the computer) or you have a day off.

I wonder which one?
