I've had the K&N for almost a year and am very happy with it. No noise at all, but good performance, paid $199 at truckperformance.com

I wouldn't put either one on my truck. They let in more dirt at higher micron diameters. That is what wears out your truck engine.

K&N or AirAid is basically the same IMHO. It's just a matter of personal prefrence. I picked the AirAid only because I liked the way it looked. I bought mine from F-150 Online Digital Marketplace (here at the online store)for $199.95

They are both about the same and both give the same "whoosh" sound like the old 4-barrel carbs used to make. The K&N used to have problems with the mount, but they have corrected that and it mounts very securely now. 'Bout the only difference is the looks.

Here's my K&N:

Cool

The K&N is CARB legal. That is important for those of us who get an emmission test every couple of years.

Question

Acadianbob:

I’m a little confused on your comment about “they let more dirt” in as opposed to, what, a stock filter? This is simply and undeniably untrue after researching filter construction. A stock filter is made from synthetic fibers, which are, course and do not allow a true meshing effect to take place between walls. Commonly, these stock filters (or aftermarkets such as FRAM) are only two or three layers thick. K&N has engineered a method of compressing 5 layers of cotton (not synthetic) wall together and then ever so slightly release the pressure to allow for some breathing room between layers.

The only portal where dirt could be introduced would be if the owner/mechanic would install the filter incorrectly on the intake pipe. This would be difficult to do with a K&N drop-in style filter. I have gone both routes and I prefer the drop-in method because I need not remove/cut anything from my factory config. K&N sells with a filter servicing aerosol and oil treatment that should be performed approximately in the same intervals that one would change his or her OEM filter. This increases the attraction of dirt particles that may otherwise penetrate the 5-wall membrane. I would not concern myself with the risk of particle contamination; however, if one does not clean and treat the K&N filters (or alike) they can break down with water and heat absorption over time. These particles, although not particularly harmful to the engine, can wreak havoc with your fuel injection. Just keep up the maintenance as with any thing on your truck.

For what it is worth

Carl

I see you have the 2001 4.6. I have the 2001 5.4 and K&N doesn't make a kit for that yet? They told me I was looking at months until they do. However I bought a 2000 model set up ( which I'm sure is the same ) today and I'm gonna put that in tonight. The only thing is is that I can't use the CARB # cause it won't register right. Here in CA, I only have to smog every 5 years and I won't have the truck that long I'm sure. The deal w/ the AirRaid is that they don't claim to be legal anyway so you'd have to swap in the stock intake at smog time.
I had a K&N on my 88 F-150 along w/ the Gibson Exhaust and it made a BIG difference.

I say Airaid, but since you're in California, K&N whould keep you out of emmisions trouble since they're certified. I sure with Evergreen would complete the red-tape process and get the Arirad certified, although I'm sure the price would have to go up.

See pic's of mine from the link in my sig. There's about 3-4 pictures of it installed.

sddaytrader- Living in San Diego you need one with a CARB certification if you want to drive legal. K&N is the only one that is certified and this is only done through 2000 models. The other ones have been dragging their heels on certification for months, years, or have no intention of getting it.
