testing ignition coil

I think I got a bad coil again. Does any body know how many ohms it should read?

We need more details, like year, engine, is it COP or the pre 01 4 tower dual coil pack setup of the 4.6.

okay make note of these specs. ....

primary resistance=0.3 to 1.0 ohms
secondary resistance=6.5 to11.5 K ohms
dissconnect negative terminal on battery
disconnect the terminal at the coil pack
mark and disconnect the plug wires
remove the four screws and lift out(makes it a lot easier)
look at the connection port and you,ll see three tabs
the center is the positive terminal the outsides are the negative terminals.
connect an ohm meter across one of the negative terminals and the center positive terminal. write down reading now go to the other negative terminal, write down the reading.
if the reading doesnt fall within the primary numbers replace.
now to check the secondary.
connect between these terminals and read and write down the readings(oh yeah turn your ohm meter dial to the K-ohms setting)
7/4,8/2,1/6 and 3/5 if the readings dont fall with in the above numbers replace.
my suggestion is to go with the MSD packs,70 bucks at JEGS or Summit, i replaced mine when the engine felt sluggish g/luck

If you have the 4 tower coil packs follow TexasD's instructions.
I will make one side note. Different sources do list different specs sometimes.
Haynes syas primary should be within 0.3=1.0 ohms, and secondary should be 6.5-11.5K ohms
Now my GP Sorenson spec sheet says that style of coil should be 0.3 -0.7 ohms and 11.1-16.6 k ohms.

Now I took my working stock OE coils off just to replace with Accel coil packs. A few months later I decided to test them and under Haynes specs one coil pack failed. Go figure might try to swap one out one day and see if it runs bad.

For a COP ignition the specs are
primary 0.55 ohms
secondary 5,550 ohms
Not sure on the exact test procedure but can find out if needed.

That's good to know. I just did a plug change a few days ago. I also checked all my coils and they all read .8-.9 ohms.

I have Accel (part# 140018), available at Summit or Jegs. Summit was a litte cheaper but was on backorder so I had to pay $55 each from Jegs.
Do not hold me to it but I think the Accel pack ups the voltage about 4000 volts. The MSD is supposed to do more than that but wasn't on the market (that I knew of) when I bought mine.
The stock system is not that bad, it buts out over 30,000 volts.

Accel (part# 140018) installed in bout 10-15 mins... and after start up the engine seems to idle better sitting still.. and be smoother acceleration climbing a hill and passing a vehicle goin down the highway... im very impressed so far with these coils... since i already filled up before i put on these parts... im wondering what gains ill see now on my mpg.
