Unhappy In-line 6 mot0r

I have a 1993 model F-150 XL with the i6 motor. It gets terrible mpg..maybe 12 in the city and 14 hwy. Any advise on getting better mpg...I have tried babying it and its still hogs the gas...Hmmm...maybe get rid of the monster..

Not too much info to go on, but here goes my initial thoughts. Check the plugs. If over two years old and 24k, change em. Also check and change the distributer cap, rotor and plug wires.

The next step would be the carb. I'm not too familar with the I6, so don't know if it's computer controlled, injected or what. It being a '93, it's probably all the above. Maybe check the PCV valve. It should "rattle" when you shake it. Check the air cleaner. If it's dirty or "wet", it won't flow well.

If all this is ok, then maybe some more info on your rig. # miles, tranny type, compare power now to when mileage was better?

Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

Hey wrmfisher, welcome.
I had a '94 F150 XL with the 4.9 and a 5-speed. I never really calculated my gas milage, but it was'nt good. That 300ci 6 was a great motor in it's own way, but compared to the new motors, well I believe it's a bit out dated. You could try some of the mods that the folks here are using. I don't know though, is it worth it to invest money in a truck that age? And milage? If you were in the position, Ford has some strong new trucks. Im now driving a '98 F150 with a 4.6. I really like it. The 4.6 has great power and gets better gas milage than the 4.9.
What ever you do, good luck. Your in the right place for the answers you are looking for.

My Dad has the same truck. He changed the fuel filter. Night and day difference. Hope it works for you.

I had a 92 F-150 with the 300 six, auto. It was due for a tune-up every 20,000 miles, plugs, cap, rotor. You could probably use new spark plug wires also. I put a K&N filter and 3" exhaust with a dump-truck muffler on my pick-up. My 2 wheel drive got anywhere from 14-19 mpg on the highway, depending on the weather.

At work we have 3 92 to 96 trucks with this engine. We have found that the mileage starts going bad about 25-30K after a tune up. Usually a complete tune up with plugs, cap, rotor, air filter and sometimes wires does the trick. Acouple of times a bad O2 sensor sent the mileage south also.

We love this engine for a work truck. It's very reliable, we are past 150K on one now. It still performs great. I wish they still made them.

I have an 85 f150 as a beat around truck
with the I6. It has 191000 miles...No matter
what we do with that truck it still starts
in the AM. I also own a 1998 f150 orp 4.6
and that's great also. Just my .02
Good Luck all.

i had a '94 XLT with 4.9L and auto. it got 15 to 19 on the highway and as low as 12 in the city during the winter (MN). mileage was much worse in the winter; partially the oxygenated gas and partially all of the extra drag because of the cold. it ran very well but was tough on gas and not particularly quick. hwy mileage was much better if i kept it to 70 mph or below.
