I want to buy a new 2001 f150 with either the 5.4 or 4.6 engine in it but I am not sure which one will work better for me. I will probably not tow a whole lot but I do plan on lifting it and putting larger tires on it. Which engine would be better for me. Has anyone had any problems with there 2000-2001 engines. I have read a lot on this page about the 5.4 in the later 98 and 99 engines and I wonder if they have fixed this problem yet.

So far so good. Just had the proper radiator installed today. I've got close to 30K on mine and I love the power of the 5.4. The 4.6 is no slouch either. What ever you get, just make sure that it has a blue oval on the grill.

No GM's or Blopars for me. Fords always !!!!

Currently I have a Expy with the 5.4, my dad wanted me to look for another SUV for him that gets better milage so I went and test drove one with the 4.6. Well I came to the conclusion that the 4.6 was underpowered. I'm gonna go and test drive another to see if it's any better since some vehicles just have more peep from the factory. But even if the other 4.6 works out well, I might tell him not to get the Ford because of the problem with the 5.4s and the head gasket leak, and now it seems they're having it with the 4.6s. I guess what it's really going to depend on is if Ford will cover my '99 out of warranty Head gasket leak. When a mechanic at a Ford dealer tells me that the '99 5.4s have defective gaskets, because they get a bunch of them coming in with the leak, then Ford needs to put out a recall on all the 5.4s reguardless of milage. If I feel a company sells defective products and when it breaks because of the defect and won't cover it, I've lost faith in them. So hopefully they'll fix my problem and we'll add another Expedition to our family. Shoot, if they cover it, I'll go have my old man go with the 5.4 because the 4.6 felt so under powered and that'll give me back some time to go fishing instead of driving around looking for another brand of SUV.

 

Love my 4.6!! Does everything I need it to do, tows, hauls, pulls, and keeps coming back for more!! A friend of mine had a 2000 f-150 w/the 5.4, totalled that one(not his fault), and got the 4.6 in his new one(2001), and he said he liked the 4.6 better. He has a bit bigger tires than factory- 305/70/16 Goodyear Wrangler M/T's(= to 33/12.50's I think).

I to have the 4.6L Triton in a 2001 Supercrew 4x4 and love it!!

I pull 4000lbs trailers through the Canadian Rockies and have never felt that I had been under powered....smooth realiable power for a few less bucks.

Big things come in small packages (4.6L)!

PS..Don't be scared away from the 5.4L, they are a great motor also. Chevy and Dodge have their own problems also..no vehicle is perfect!

 

I had the 4.6 in my 98. Loved it. It did everything I could ask for. I got about 15-16 mpg (w/tow pkg) before the K&N filter. 16-17 after the K&N filter. about 70%/30% highway/city driving.

I now have a 2001 w/ a 5.4. I like it even more! The power difference is very noticable. The gas mileage is about 15.5. Little less than with the 4.6, but well worth it. The sticker price difference is about $1500, and that will probably be the deciding factor for you. But I'm glad I got it.

Thank you all for the replies about the engines. I have not totally decided yet.

 

Where you will really notice the differance is on hilly terain. If where you live is fairly flat either one will be good. If where you live has a lot of hills the 5.4 might be a better choice. Just my .02 cents.
