Just recently had Ford look at my complaint reg. the same noise ( 01 4.6Ltr.).

They said that the pistons, rockers, self adjusting lifters ( yes, we do have them) were okay. The sound, a metalic--almost clacking, could be comming from our torque converter ( tranny). They stated, " This area of the truck is a echo chamber and sound will be amplified."

My truck, too, quiets down after warm up and is fine after. I do not notice any power loss or problems with acceleration.

Just keep an eye on it, maybe bring it in for a check. Let us know what, if anything, they find.

I think it is just a " normal noise" from the 4.6.

It could also be the fuel injectors clicking???

also, thought about carbon deposits from gas, but realized that there is not a big chance of this happening if you run a gas with detergents in it like Chevron w/( techron).

I have the same noise during a cold start up in my wife's 99 5.4 Expedition. Then it goes away. We noticed it happens when it is a little cooler out. Our warranty runs out next month & I wanted to have it checked but now that it is warm out it will not do it.

engine knocking at startup

Mine just started it too. Does anyone know what's the deal? 43,000 miles and oil changed every 3,000 miles.

Unhappy

Hey everyone. I too have this clicking/ticking noise at cold start up, and on accelerating. then it goes away when the engine warms up. funny thing is i did not have it until i took my truck in for 30,000 mi service about 3 months ago. and they noticed a oil leak around the right cylinder head. they replaced the head under warranty and a power steering pump, cause it was making too much noise for me at low speed turns. so now i got this almost like a short burst air release/ticking noise and it bugs me to death. gonna bring it in soon for service again and will have the techs check it out and see what the problem is. if you guys find out anything, let us know.
thanks
