Service engine light
Service engine light
Does anyone know a way to get the code out to see why the light came on? My friend has a Dodge and they have a sequence with the ignition that will cause the error code to display in the milage window. Does Ford have anything similiar? I have a 2002 BOSS F150 that only has 800 miles on it. It has the 5.4L engine.
Thanks for any help.

Perhaps for the Dodge, I'm not sure. For the Ford you'll only be able to do diagnostics on the actual instrumentation panel itself. It won't show you MIL codes. You'll need to buy yourself a code scanner such as www.obd-2.com or a hand-held unit or most Autozone stores do it for free hoping you'll buy their replacement parts.
I do have an Auto Zone near me. I have it scheduled to go to the dealer tomorrow but I thought if it was something simple I would avoid the aggrevation of going to the dealer. I did check the gas cap per the dealers request, wich is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, but I did check it.
Thanks for the help on this one guys!

A loose gas cap is the most common reason for your Check Engine light to go on. A sealed fuel system is necessary to prevent evaporation losses into the atmosphere, it is not dumb. If your cap was loose and is now tight, it will take 3 driving cycles as defined in your owners manual to reset the error message. Read your manual, that's why it is in your glove box!!

Glove Box! Now there is something that really needs to under go a name change. I vote for owners manual and wheel cover lock compartment ONLY. NO EXCEPTIONS. No condemnts or kleenex, ect. Any one found driving without a manual or lock onboard will lose there license forever. Sorry about the rank. Can you tell I work on cars?
