It may not be true but I heard somewhere that synthetics can/will increase oil consumption.

I wonder how many people "think" their engines are burning a quart of oil between changes when it's really not? My dealer puts in the spec'd 6 quarts of oil at every change. It barely brings the level up to the midway point on the dipstick. Wondering how many people look at the level a month or two later and think they need to add oil because it's below the max level?

This is what I did to reduce the amount of oil consumption. I saw this reccomended some where here. I used an air compressor filter. I know it normal to get some oil through the pcv but after installing the Magnacharger the amout increased. I was concerned that I wasn't running as efficiently as I could with all the oil mixing in. I get about a half pint every 1000mi. I'm sure that some of the oil makes it through because the fiter is saturated. I think it just catches some. I have had this on there for about 5000mi and have experianced no problems. I empty the oil back into the motor. Perhaps there could be problems with this but so far so good on my truck.

I think another alternative is a crank case breather. I think that sounds like a good idea but I can't fit one on my truck because the Magnacharger relocates the alternator above the oil fill. A coustome program is also necessary to use the crank case breather.

I guess bottom line is it is acceptable (by the auto makers) to get "some" oil through the pcv.

Synthetic Rip Off...

Been running Havoline Formula III for almost 15 years now. I went to Synthetic 5W30 last oil change, and went thru almost 2.5 guarts in 3200 miles. 1500 of those were at 75 mph on the freeway. My truck has always used 1-2 qts. every 3K miles. Only time it didn't, was with Ford 5W20 oil.

Synthetic is a waste of Money. Atleast, it was in my truck.

You may have more consumption on short trips because you are "local" and therefore on and off the throttle. off throttle cause a high vacuum condition which can suck the oil out. on the highway with constant throttle, this isn't as big a factor. usually that is a sign of the consumption coming from the piston rings.

I'm burning about 1 to 1.5 quarts every 2500 miles. I usually drive very short distances (only 2 miles to work) and then an occasional 5-6 hour drive every other month or so. It has been causing me concern since this is the first vehicle I've owned that has consumed this much oil in between changes. I use Mobil 1 synthetic and have 29,800 on it right now.

For some reason I don't burn any oil, after 5,000 mi. Niether does my father's truck. Both run on synthetic, one having over 158,000 mi. on it. With rhino oil, he would go through a quart every 3,000mi., though.
