Post F150's Have Bad Starters, etc.

Well, I got my truck back today from the shop, and I was glad to find out that the problem with my truck that was making a weird noise as well as not letting it start afterwards was just a bad starter and nothing else.

I was talking to the technichian at my dealer, Rancho Santa Margarita Ford, and he said that Ford will soon be recalling these starters on 2000 F150's because there have been major problems with them. I personally had not heard of this problem and haven't seen any posts here about them, but he told me the recall should be happening shortly but I am not sure how many vehicles will be replaced. He said that he owns an F150 and is on his 3rd starter and it has 9,000 miles and about a dozen more trucks have came in with the same problem.

Also when I was there I Figured to bring up the radiator question as I have a 1.02 and should have the 2 core, and I showed him the print out and he said he had heard a little about it, called up the head guy and asked him what size radiator mine should of came with and he said the 2 core and also what tranny and he said some number code that I will find out pretty soon which is a bigger tranny. They are now ordering my radiator and also said I may need a new tranny cause they had heard that this problem was not only getting the wrong radiator but people were getting a different tranny then they were supposed to, so I would recommend everyone who is having a problem to check to make sure they have the right transmission.

I am going to be going back in about a week and that is when I will konw about the tranmission adn the proper number you should have, and if someone else knows they can say it.

My recomendation is being straight forward and honest and if you have a good dealer they will take care of you.

Hmmm... This just keeps getting more interesting... I know the tow package is supposed to have a high capacity radiator and batter, but a tranny?

2000-2001 f150's come with a 4R70w across the board. Only the 7700's came with the E4od [the larger trans]. Tow package or not, that is the trans you get. The big problem is the wrong radiator which is hopefully being resolved.

Question

What if his dealer was referring to some kind of enhancement to the tranny instead? I found this little tidbit on edmunds.com:

4-- Transmission Requirement/XLT
Requires: [44*] Electronic 4-Spd. Auto Or [44M] 5-Speed Manual Overdrive/XLT

The 4-- is some kind of part number. I have no idea exactly what it means though. Just a guess.

Perhaps his servce tech meant the tranny cooler? Has anyon checked to see if they've got one?

Well, the dealer said they would check for me, and shockingly enough I trust them, but they will show me when I bring it in so I understand and everything. I think he meant some enhancement to it, but I wasn't quite sure and he said the only way to tell was the part number on the tranny cause there were 2 different ones available and the tow package ones had a different serial number.

Are you sure they are not referring to the 4R100, the one in the super duties. My F150 HD has the 4R100, so not all F150's come with the 4R70.
