Safe to run different remote filter??

If I run a Perma-Cool remote filter, is it safe to run like a FL-1A or something since the oil filter adaptors don't accept the FL-820 thread size?? Anyone doing this?

Save Time and money

The way I have it figured is take your Truck to walmart and the labor is $7. Now you can buy all these adoptors and stuff for $80 plus time, oil, disposal, clean up the mess possibly hurt yourself somehow..ect. or pay $7 This is a no brainer for me. just the adopter kit alone pays for 11 changes and if you change it once every three months that is almost 3 years oil changes. If you use sythetic it could be up to 6 years..that is saying you change it every 6,000 or six months like some people do. Just my opinion on this matter. Opinions are like @ssholes every one has one and everyones stinks but your own...

Is it safe to run a filter that is larger with more filtering capacity, and more oil flow??? Hmmmm, lets see, more flow would mean that you would have less chance of oil starvation.

The answer

Yes it is safe to run larger filters, with more filtering capacity, more oil flow, and better cooling!!! :

Good, because I called the parts department today and the friggin guy told me to get the factory remote filter off of a '98 would be $160 for the block base and $133 for the filter mount. I'm gonna go Perma-Cool and run an FL-1A I guess. I just wanted to make sure a different filter would be safe.

I installed the Perma-Cool Remote Filter Adapter and it cost me $35 from Summit. I'm using either Mobil 1 or Fram HP1 Racing Filters. Like msparks has said - more oil flow, more filter media, and you get some extra oil cooling with the remote hoses and (in my case) the filter is in the air stream more. Just a note: The Mobil 1, Fram HP1, and the K&N filters have extra heavy duty canisters that protect against stones & debris better than the thin stock filters.

I also added a 'T' at the filter adapter to add an oil pressure gauge hose and a low oil pressure switch that cuts the engine off if the oil pressure drops below a safe limit.

Good luck in your installation!

So your oil pressure and everything was just fine after running a FL-1A type filter? Thanks for the help.

One thing though, although it may be minimul, just because the filter is bigger does not mean more flow. The filter will increase capacity but does absolutely nothing for flow. Remember, it still has to enter and exit the filter through the same size openings. Actually smaller in this case, so your point may be moot.

The 22X1.5mm thread size of the 820S is a 'bigger'opening than the 3/4-16 FL-1A type thread size. It wouldn't matter how much oil you could flow through the internals of the filter if your smallest restriction is at the very exit of the filter...which is the case here. I'm not saying it's significant or even matters at all but it is true, and as far as fluids go, it's a fact. Just something to be aware of. This is why I have been asking so many questions before I switch.

I would like to know someone with a real oil pressure gauge before and after.

I'm just wondering if Galaxy is satisified with the answers he got this time because he's been asking this same question in about 5 different forums.

Gee, I hope that doesn't disturb you too much. I am new here and have noticed different forums get alot more/different replies than others so figured I'd shop around. I like to cover everything before I do something. Sorry to put you out. When I get an answer I am satisfied with I'll stop. You certainly have been a great help however.
