MAF Mod

I read someones mod list and it stated gutted MAF. How do you do that and does it run better? When I think of gutting something I think about the silencer in the intake tube...also any easy gutting that gives a little more power. Always looking for the home made mods to get more HP at no $ just time. If any one has one PLEASE POST!!!. I have already sliced the canester for the K&N that is a good mod too!

Tomatotruck--I saw that on Talleywacker's signature and asked him about it, his reply was to forget I ever saw it. He didn't go into detail about it and did ask, I just forgot it.

Thanks for the info. Hey I noticed that yours states ported and polished. Is that with a factory TB or after market. How much would a guy pay for that and does it work? I really thought about buying the BBK after maket 75mm TB for $200 and maybe a port and polish....or is it already done?

The MAF mod is not worth anything.... forget you heard about it, I will go into detail, but first you must forget you ever heard of it and by then I wouldn't have to It's not worth anything powerwise.... it'll either keep your normal a/f or it will screw them up, it makes the maf reading capabilties innaccurate and it also voids your warranty!!!

About the throttle body... heres my HOW TO:

Modifying anything on your MAF is bad idea...changed your transfer function. A few years ago we simply didn't know any better...so everyone gutted and drilled their MAF (drilled the sampling tube). Since then we have learned better :-D

There's a thread not too long ago about it...long one. Read thru it...a few good links in there.

Be fore warned that if you gut the MAFS, it might work like a GMS or another brand, or you could get all sorts of error codes.

I trolled here and at a mustange site, and saw the technical trival prusuit on this topic, so I just opted for a GMS MAFS.

If you do this and the check engine light comes on, or you get error codes on the odo hack, then you just shot yourself in the foot. Time to buy one anyway.

Me, after reading all the long posts, I just bit the bullet, and bought a MAFS. That way if I ever have error codes, I can disco the battery, put the stocker back in ( along with my stock air box, instead of the K&N ), and start to do the daigs from there.

That is me, I work that way about doing diags, so I wanted to get back to day one when I had a odo clean of errors, if something ever does come up.

I am saving up for the T/B replacement, since I blew my last wad on the electric fans. <g>

so far so good, and no chip to speak of, I am now getting ~ 15.5 city when I keep my foot out of it, and I like that <g>

just food for thought, take it with a grain of salt, read all the threads ( that also link to external sites ) and make your own conclusion of what you feel safe doing.

Thumbs up

Been running with a "gutted" MAF for about a month and a half, and no trouble yet. I have heard that you should NOT do it to the plastic MAF's, no matter how tempting it is. I have the older aluminum bodied MAF, and it worked. I did not eliminate the sampling tube so that may have helped me out. I DID get an improved throttle response, I'm not imagining it! Would I do it again? Probably not. Not enough gain for the potential problems. If I ever do have a problem, I still have a stock MAF housing to switch back to. It's up to your choice whether to do it or not, but with all the newer trucks having the plastic one, I wouldn't if I were you. Just my .02cents.,,,,,98

I was fortunate. My 2000 has the plastic maf. I cut the tower down and it set a code. I was abl e to glue the cut part back on. I now have a shorter than stock tower. My guess it that I gained 2,000 hp and 5,000 lbs/ft of torque. Do not waste your time on the plastic MAF meter.
